If a website generates a site map automatically does it have to be submitted to google or will it get found anyway?

If you go into google webmaster tools does and there is no sitemap listed for a site does it mean it hasn't been submitted or that it hasn't found any sitemap for the site.

Thanks, Ron

I don't believe a sitemap is generated automatically. I could be wrong (god knows!), but I believe that you have to generate it for it to show in Google Webmaster Tools.

If you build a sitemap file, it is sometime quicker to submit it to Google Webmaster Tools, but they will eventually find it if it is built properly.

That's what I thought. But would it be listed in the webmaster tools section if it wasn't submitted but was found?

If it was found already, it would show up there.

Just submit one regardless and/or do what Kev said.

Add your sitemap location to your robots.txt file. Just about all search engines will grab the robots.txt file before indexing the site. So by adding your sitemap location to your robots.txt, your submitting your sitemap to all search engines that index your site.

Add this line to your robot.txt

    Sitemap: http://www.example.com/site-map-location.xml

Change the domain name and site map location to match your site.
