Interesting... you may want to scan some of your 'bonuses'!

I just thought this was rather interesting.

I won't say which product it is (although probably a lot of people are aware of it, simply because the owner had a lot of good connections with affiliates, etc so quite an e-mail blast was sent out).

Anyways, I found it interested -- scanning the bonus package (by accident) -- according to the virus scanner there were actually 10-15 trojans in the actual package! Obviously I am assuming the person that put the package together simply scraped together what they had sitting on their harddrive -- but there were actually viruses/trojans in it! (some of the .exe files)

Anyways, because this was such a big blast, and that was overlooked, I am assuming some small time guys might invariably/accidentally get viruses in their packages too (reselling plr .exe files, etc) -- so just thought I'd suggest if you do get bonuses, make sure you scan them first!

Thanks for the reminder. But I don't receive bonuses in .exe file, nor I do include bonuses in .exe file as well. Normally, it's in zip file, and once opened, it's in PDF.

Good practices. FWIW, pdf is one of the currently most exploited file formats. It's sheer numbers - dang near everybody has a pdf reader installed on their machine and many, many, many of them are never updated. Find a flaw, hack some code, distribute a pdf or compromise a web site to take advantage of the flaw, and you own your own botnet of PC zombies.

I hope you notified the person with the bonus package!

Hey, the almost certainly didn't know about it and they have an obligation to clean it up before any more go out the door.

I recommend everybody gets themselves a free copy of AVG.

It's compareable to even top software and much faster than Norton or McAfee which are more expensive.

FYI: Opening a .zip is equally as dangerous as opening a .exe.

It is possible to bundle a hidden .exe with the .zip. When the .zip is opened, the hidden .exe runs.

      Great point.

It's also common place to "hide" the file extension so people don't think it's an .exe or something bad.

      e.g.

This file is totally safe to open.pdf .exe

(yep, they space out file name, put a fake extension of .pdf in the middle and it's really a .exe) - you have to look at the right-most letters after the last dot.

      Another example:

This file is totally safe to open.zip .exe

      Sneaky buggars.

Certain types of programs can also automatically gove off false positives when it comes to an anti virus scan. But I do agree its good practice to make sure your products or bonuses are clean and dont pose any sort of risk.

Somebody also should mention there are very legitimate .exe ebooks!

Before .pdf all the ebooks were .exe files and I know for sure there are people releasing ebooks in that format even today. They give the author/owner the ability to provide a key and to turn on/off functionality (just as with software).

And many antivirus software will flag exe files as malicious... Heck, even Gmail doesn't want to let me send my own exe file zipped from one computer to the other - it says it is dangerous.

After Istvan's post, all I have left to sat on this is:

I never accidentally scan downloads, regardless of the source. I do it every time, on purpose.

        Same here John,

I have Prevx and it scans the packages while they are downloading and
when it locates a suspected file it believes may be infected it quarantines
it until I decide what needs to be done.

        To the OP,
If you are sure that you didn't receive False Positives from your antivirus
program then Please make sure you contact the vendor and let them know.

This could spread like wild fire through the IM community.

        Have a Great Day!
        Michael
