Wanna Know where 1/5 of the United States Hangs out?

A survey was just released today (I got this from the radio) that 1/5 of the US plays social networking games on facebook.

I have seen some posts that think facebook is going downhill, and don't bother with promoting things with games because they are too old, etc.

If just 1/5 of the US is playing these games, what percentage do you think are now actually using Facebook in general?
#1 or 5 #hangs #states #united #wanna

Could be since there is a huge increase in unemployment in the usa that there are more people with more time to burn ..

Did the survey address the demographics of that 1/5?

I'm not suggesting there's a correlation, but here's a random fact I learned this week:
1/5 of Americans believe the sun revolves around the earth.
" One adult American in five thinks the Sun revolves around the Earth, an idea science had abandoned by the 17th century." (Quoted from http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/30/sc...file.html?_r=1)
When you realize that, a lot of other nutty poll results start making more sense...

lmao that's funny if you ask me. I guess because of allthe recent down turn in things people can play more games.

These poll always make me laugh because they have nothing better to make poles on.

My 27 year old ex-ex-girlfriend used to spend 20 to 30 hours a week playing games on FB. Which is why I gave her the boot and find me one that can't stand Facebook. lol

She only had a part-time job so she had a lot of free time to kill.

I also remember when 1 in 5 people used to watch Wheel of Fortune.

I for one am very surprised that Farmville is so addicting. I checked it out and was reminded of my old Super Nintendo system. The game is completely 2d and as bland as it could be. Perhaps the platform being integrated with friends and neighbors is a bit innovative but multiplayer gaming is nothing new.

I think there are a ton of game studios out there scratching their heads over those silly Zynga games, hopefully though the gaming industry won't turn back the clock and start releasing scrolling platform games again.

Nevertheless, there is definitely an obvious correlation between social networking and social gaming platforms that could not only make money but be much better made. Give the people what they want because all ages and both genders (primarily females though) play Farmville, the demographic is 22-60+ according to this:

Average Social Gamer is a 43 yr old woman

Wouldn't an ex-ex-girlfriend be your current girlfriend? If an ex-girlfriend is a former girlfriend, then an ex-ex-girlfriend would be a former ex-girlfriend and the only way she could be a former ex-girlfriend is if she was your current girlfriend. A former girlfriend is always a former girlfriend unless she becomes your girlfriend again.

So, is your point that your girlfriend learned to hate Facebook, which would make for an argument that it's heavy usage may be a fad, and you took her back? Or not?

The radio announcer was telling everyone to go join them on Facebook - and said, "don't tell me you don't have a facebook account because a survey just released yesterday (or today) says that 1/5th of all Americans now spend time playing games like Farmville on Facebook." Something along those lines.

She said it in a way that I think this was an actual number she found somewhere - not just made up.

It's a Cape Cod radio station, so may have come from Boston globe or something - but someone would have to do a search to find the source.

What's that, like 60 million people? I'm surprised the number isn't higher. FB has over 500 million accounts. Over 100 million photos A DAY are uploaded to FB.

    So yeah, games are fun.

      Jill,

Ironically, five minutes after your post reply hit my email inbox so did this one from CNET:

Virtual farm games absorb real money, real lives | Web Crawler - CNET News

It tells a great deal about the economics of FarmVille, specifically, and other online games.

There appears to be serious money buried in some of those fields.

I'm beginning to wonder if my not being a 'gamer' has affected my income potential?

To those of us deriving most, if not all, our income from online activities, you're right, they're not crazy.

However to the vast majority of people working traditional offline jobs or businesses or minimally connected to online activity the methods in the article Dan linked to would appear, to say the least, unusual.

We based our judgments and evaluations relative to our own experiences.

              I guess. But I wouldn't think that 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, or 15 would even touch the fringe of "crazy".

Perhaps we're too narrowly defining the word "crazy"?

Granted the classic primary definition is, "not sensible; stupid; insane" but in more recent times it has been used to describe positive emotions like extreme fondness or love.

In slang speech it often implies something that is different to what is normally seen, thought of or conceived. Not necessarily in a derogatory sense.

Crazy is in the eye of the beholder.

Facebook is hardly going downhill. It has almost become a standard medium of communication. Out of all my friends and family, my mother is the only person I can think of who doesn't use Facebook but that's just because she's paranoid about the Internet.

The social gaming niche would be very interesting to get into I'd imagine.. considering the popularity.

I was scrolling down to make this same comment. It's true. In most offices I go to, people are setting up on facebook, posting things that are happening at work and playing the games. Even Managers and supervisors do it.

What's really surprising is they "talk" about their bosses, company owners, and fellow workers, not always in nice ways. You know what my blankity blank boss just did.... Stupid Jim just..... and it's not shrinking this activity is growing.

I've mentioned to a few people that not only can they be seen on facebook but any company worth its salt is watching their online activity in house. They basically say "So What."

Farmville itself has promotions going on - like sign up to Bing for 2 free farm cash. They (Zynga) hold regular promotions to places like 7-11, and recently promoted some organic blueberry company.

They also push players to purchase farm cash for charity like Haiti.

There is a lot of money in this different virtual real estate.
