Follow Ups Vs Broadcasts

Hi I am hearing mixed opinions when it comes to building a list. Some say you should have a follow up sequence and some are suggesting that you should only use broadcasts...what is the better one to do?

It depends entirely on the site/niche/purpose etc. I know that's a generic answer, but unfortunately it's the only answer.

    Do both.

They each have advantages and disadvantages and
you need to decide on the objective of your e-mail
first. Only then can you decide whether to send it
as a broadcast or add it to an autoresponder series.

Autoresponder series are great for providing a
structured presentation, e.g. to move people from
being a prospect to becoming a buyer of a particular
    product.

A broadcast is great for providing a more timely
    e-mail communication, e.g. based on a current
    event.

You can easily do both although if you have messages already written and going out to your subscribers, you don't want to send too many broadcasts. If you do both at the same time, you basically bombard your subscribers with too many messages. Doing this will get a lot of your subscribers to OPT out of your newsletter.

Now, once you active subscribers are out of your messages and become INACTIVE, then you can send most of your broadcasts to them but not to your active subscribers.

I use autoresponders to tell subscribers the information that you know you are going to have to tell all of them and then use broadcasts to tell them about more current things etc.

  • You MUST use both: follow up to build relationship and broadcasts for occasional messages/promotions.

I asked this very same question not too long ago; (kinda); yet, my concern was more about the information being as 'current' as possible.

Granted, broadcasts will definitely be more 'current'; its auto-responders that tend to fall out of date because they're pre-formatted. Yet, they also prove to be an essential tool to use.

I've since decided that using both is definitely the way to go as long as I'm able to keep my auto-responders 'current'. The only way to accomplish this is by devising a mechanism where the non-static information IN the auto-responder is dynamically created prior to the auto-responder being sent out.

Works out to be something rather interesting because of how auto-responders are staggered based on the date of opt-in; nobody gets the exact same auto-responder... which is pretty cool, actually.

That same mechanism can be (is) used to generate broadcasts on the fly, as well.

    win/win
