Whats working best for you `text banners` or image banners ?

Hi guys,

Just getting into having my own banners designed as a new campagin i`m running with CJ doesn`t have any really good banners. But i`ve read a few times now that `text banners` get a better CTR than regular images banners is anybody else finding this ?

Also just so i`m 100% sure would a `text banner` be something like say a very large adsense ad ? Is this what a text banner is ? I would go to my banner designer an simply have him design a large adsense ad what ever size i needed with the popular adsense colours .. white background, blue text, black/gray url ect ect...

Cheers Jim

    Hey Jim

Yeah, text banners is basically an image banner, but then it's filled with text (to my understanding)...

Though I have not been in banner advertising before, I read that the most effective type of text banner is one that looks like a Google text ad (Title in blue and underline [with bold], description in black, and the URL in green). And beside the ad text, you can place a small image (that's related to your ad)...

This, from what I read, has a much better clickthrough rate than a normal image banner ad or a normal text ad...

    Hope this helps... Good luck!

    Cheers

I run a text ad network and a graphic ad network, and I can tell you that the text ad network converts at 4% where as the banner one converts at around 1%.

    Why don't you split test?

Banner advertising is a form of interruption marketing. Someone is surfing thenet for whatever reason and bam they are attracted to your ad and hopefully they'll click on it.

You're constantly supposed to split test different banners and see which works better.

I use text banners as well as image banners. In my case text banners convert better than image banners. However I see plenty of image banners that are running for an extended period of time. Some change in appearence others don't.

  • For me, text banners have scored higher CTR than image banners. I think internet users have become totally banner blind.

I like text banners also but I also usually include a picture. I think there's two reason text banners out perform image banners.

      1. You can better pre-qualify a prospect by using text.
      2. The text acts like a headline. It's draws prospects into the ad.

One of the problems with image ads is many designers want them to be artistic and pleasing to the eye. Nothing wrong with that as long as they know (and understand) that the primary goal of the ad is to get prospects to click through---not to win a beauty contest.

You also might want to think about animated ads (gif or flash) they give you all the benefits of both a text ad and an image ad in one package.
