Question - Paypal - Site Selling

Ok, anyone heard of any recent scams of Scam Artist paying via Paypal Mass Payment, and at the end it turns out to be fraud and loose a site?
What I mean is, let's say I have a buyer who wants to buy my site, and they want to pay via Paypal Mass Payment (not 100% I understand mass payment), what is the possibility of me getting scammed?

Thanks in advance

It really makes little to no sense for anyone to want to pay you for "a" site using 'Mass Pay', via PayPal. It would actually cost them "more money" to pay you this way.

I would request that they pay you via traditional PayPal payments... or even better yet, you create an invoice in PayPal and send it to them.

Well I have someone who wants to pay me via - Paypal Mass Payment and it cost them very little in fees.
I smell a Scam, but reading through, Mass Payment is from paypal balance ONLY and no need to worry about charge backs from credit cards. And there is a strict process for business account to send Mass payments.
Just odd, but it looks I should be protected if I send the site files via certified mail.

Thinking a little more about it and factoring in what you're selling; there might be a reason for someone to want to use Mass Pay... if they're purchasing a lot of sites from different people, at once. I guess someone in a position to do so and wanting to distribute those sites out to VAs, (or whatever), could use/prefer that method of payment.

You're right in that the PayPal balance is used. Yet, the process isn't all that hard; just a matter of creating a list.

I'd still use an escrow system, though; but that's just me and I'm a little paranoid.

      Good Luck!

TBH, you should also send them a CD with Site Files so you can provide shipping information instead of calling it a virtual good, saves you from a lot of paypal hassle

DaWarrior - its usually pays to listen to your gut. Having said that I would recommend you generate the invoice too, even if its outside of PayPal, and then get a physical mailing address and send the person a copy of the site etc on DVD - and have them sign for it. That way your transaction is for a physical product that you shipped and someone accepted. It may help if there is a problem later on that you can show proof of a physical delivery.
Also Escrow is always an option - maybe not now on a done deal - but something to consider in the future.

  • I've honestly heard more about people trying to sell domains from phished accounts, than disputes over entire sites. If your buying or selling a site you always want to do your due diligence, that includes having a physical address and phone number for the other party, signing a contract, and negotiating the transfer of the sale.

For larger transactions I always go with requiring either an Escrow or Wire Transfer, before the site is transferred. Since you have a lot more security and know the funds are available and in your account or with a trusted broker.
