I'm getting a VPS... are there any alternatives to cpanel?

Hi guys,

I am getting a managed VPS as my sites are starting to outgrow shared hosting, but cpanel doesnt come with it.

They want to charge me $18 per month, which is fine, but are there any other cpanel like control panels that I could use that are more affordable?

I need something like that as I wouldnt know how to do anything without it, the host said I would need to have SSH knowledge in order to not have cpanel.

Not quite sure what they are talking about, but I tend to shy away from things I have never heard of when it comes to stuff like this

Any recommendations?

If they offer CPanel, they should also offer Plesk (search Google, it'll be at the top).

Should be a little cheaper and offers pretty much the same as CPanel.

Cool, I will ask them about it.

I also found this: LxCenter | HyperVM and Kloxo

I am a little hesitant of free stuff like this, especially because I dont know much about servers and stuff, like attacks and whatnot.

Also, I just read that a VPS with 128 dedicated RAM (256 burstable) wont do well with cpanel... is this right? Cause if not I will go up a package to the 256 dedicated.

If you don't know what SSH is you don't want
    these either.

Plesk is OK if you can't get it just pay the $18
per month you life will be a lot easier.

They say 256MB of Ram is needed just to run cPanel/whm smoothly, so go for 512MB or more. You're looking at around $35/$40 for a managed plan with cPanel and 512MB. Here's a few plans to compare: Best value VPS Hosting plans - Web Hosting Diary

Plesk plans will be a bit cheaper, but if your current sites are on cpanel you probably want to keep them on cpanel for easy moving.

I have used other variations, but in my limited experience, cPanel is the most comprehensive and certainly the easiest to use.

I am somewhat of a computer nerd, but SSH just makes things painful to me.

18$ a month for a VPS? Sound like an overpriced shared hosting to me. If you want a great VPS provider go with Servint. It's 50$ a month, but it's well worth it.

Probably limited in CPU units or dedicated RAM. We started ours at 39 with a 20GB/768/1vCPU @ 2k units. This we determined outperformed 99% of shared hosting packages we investigated. However I've seen 20$ packages that went 10/256/1vCPU@1k units that were slower then Godaddy hosting.

If your on a budget, it's better to get a killer shared hosting package then a VPS. Search Engines look at site performance now as a metric. Not to mention if the page doesn't start loading under 7 seconds you lose that set of eyes.

Ashley, it kind of sounds either your not ready to budget out a VPS or you've set your budget wayyy to low. Perhaps a reseller cPanel package on a good web hosting company would be better option for you.

Maybe you are right. I will talk with the host and see what he thinks. I have the budget, but I just wanted to see if I could save that $18 bucks a month that I would be spending on cpanel.

It adds up to a lot and I dont see any point in spending money if there is a viable option. It seems there is not, I was hoping for a solid alternative that everyone agreed on.

Thanks everyone though! I appreciate the help

    Thanks guys for the help.

I looked at all the suggestions, and apart from plesk, they all look like something an actual host would use, to setup the individual control panels... is this right?

The only reason I am looking for an alternative is because if I can find something that is similar to cpanel, yet cheaper I may be able to bump up to the next level of hosting.

Like webmin, it looked really complicated! Directadmin was a bit cheaper if you buy the yearly license, but again I am not sure if that is for hosting companies, or can be installed on a vps and used like cpanel.

Thanks again, going to do a bit more research see if I cant dig something up!
