Forum Usage Tips For New People: There Is Nothing New Under The Sun

You are unique, just like everyone else...
King Solomon was the wisest patriarch in the Bible... He is believed to be the author of the Biblical quote, which in essence says, "There is nothing new under the sun..."

In the human condition, we all want to believe since our questions are special to us, then perhaps no one has asked the question quite in the same way that we are going to ask the question...

This is the reason why so many people are willing to ask the question that has been asked thousands of times before in the hallowed pages of the WF or other forums...

At the top of the page, there is a Search button in the red navigation bar...

Solomon was right... There is nothing new under the sun...

Chances are good that your question has been answered a thousand times before today, so take a minute to use the Search button to look for the people who have asked the question already, to see the answers that have been defined before now...

This will give you a well-rounded answer to those questions that occupy your mind...

By reading the answers of others before posting your own version of the question, you will gain a deeper understanding of the full scope of the question, so that all of us can learn from your questions...

With a global understanding of the common answers given to the basic question, you will find that you are able to ask more intelligent questions that deserve more intelligent answers...

It is the more intelligent answers to the deeper questions that keeps our forum membership actively participating in the forum, learning from and sharing with others...

If YOU would have used the search function, you would have seen this topic has been brought up many times before.

    Just sayin'

LOL... I know... And all have been excellent...

But I did try to follow my own advice -- to add a twist to the topic, perhaps enabling people to get more out of the global topic...

If Solomon was so wise why did he have close to 1800 wives and concubines under the same roof. Anybody in their right mind would of know that was a recipe for disaster!

But I get your point loud and clear. I read through Ecclesiastes once a year or so and am always struck by the wisdom contained in it. With technology changing the way we market our businesses every week or so I think for a while there will be lots of new things under the sun.

He was so wise that his wisdom wouldn't even make sense to us... he had a system for organizing his wives duh?

Ps. Solomon may retract that statement if he lived today. I see alot of new stuff... principles never change though.

    Hello,

I'm a newbie here and I'm not sure if there's a thread somewhere similar to my question.

This might sound silly but how can I thank a post? I was looking for a "thanks" button but I can't find it anywhere.

    Thank you for your help.

You might have to have a specific number of posts on your name before you can see the Thanks button...

It should appear on the post itself, next to the Quote - Multiquote buttons...

I do know that even as an experienced member, I am limited to the number of Thanks I can offer each day...

Is that so? I guess I'll just have to post more comments then. There are so many helpful tips here and I really want to thank those who posted them.

    Thanks for your help tpw.

I believe you simply have to be logged in as a member before you get a thanks button. Since you had to be logged in to post, you should see the button.

As Bill said, there is a daily limit, but I didn't think it had a minimum post count.

Re-reading your OP, I'm not so sure I agree with your premise.

All members follow a curve and enter conversations at a different level of understanding. Not everyone will be at the same level of depth on the same subject at the same time, and that's fine with me.

Could some people stand to use the search function? Sure. Does it help to make ANOTHER post like this, which will largely be ignored by those who need it most? Maybe, maybe not.

There are also cases where the exact same question, worded in the same way, needs new answers. In those cases it doesn't make a lot of sense to resurrect old threads as the old information may add to the confusion.

To be fair, there have been times when people ask certain questions and I will point them to a previous thread on the topic. Other times I will answer right in the thread.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea to use the search function, but there are also times when it's okay not to. Out of curiosity, do you use the search function EVERY SINGLE TIME before posting to make sure nobody else has said the same thing? My guess is that you're normal enough to say "no".

So, back to the quoted portion of your post. You say "It is the more intelligent answers to the deeper questions that keeps our forum membership actively participating in the forum" and I say...

It is the wide variety of answers to a variety of questions, regardless of a subjective term like "depth", that keeps our forum membership actively participating in the forum.

    All the best,
    Michael

Having read your response, I am not sure I fully agree with my OP either...

Search is a nice feature and it can reveal some gems, but it should not be the final say on any subject...

Interestingly, the guy who was the inspiration for my OP gave examples of other threads that he thought would definitively answer the question posed... I realized that his version of a perfect answer left a lot to be desired...

He proved to me with his final response that "everything that has ever been said on a topic" may not provide the kind of answer that would satisfy me either...

Additionally, starting a new thread may allow a more inclusive answer to be included in one thread, as opposed to a diverse set of answers across several threads...
