Alexa Top Sites: Aweber 43. & Constant Contact 76. What does it mean for IM and the Affiliate Model?

I was just looking through the Alexa Top 100 for the US and found Aweber on 43. and Constant Contact on 76. place.
And it made me wonder what it means for IM when these two sites are that high up in the rankings.

One thing is for sure: it certainly means that the marketplace is getting very crowded and every Tom, Dick and Harry is trying to build an email list.

Another conclusion I draw from this is that actual real content in your emails gets more important. I think that the days of just sending out promotion after promotion like most A and B grade Gs do is coming to an end. At least when you plan on building a business long-term and do not plan on constantly having to replace your unsubscribes.

It would be interesting to find out what some of you think about this? Or what you have noticed recently happening in the marketplace?

Cheers,

mtkman

Use netcraft, Alexa just counts noobs who have been suckered into loading there crappy toolbar and malware.

Yea, just like everyone tries SEO, or product creation or offline......for a week, doesn't make any money and then moves on to the next thing with a bright shiny star attached to it.

I can think of a good amount of marketers that do nothing but load up promotion after promotion and blast them out. Is it a business model I would do? No, but it works for them because they have a list of 30K with more coming every day. Get those kinds of numbers and you can do it to. It's a numbers game at that point.

Most won't stick with it long enough to learn how to track numbers and make adjustments to do anything with it. Building a list and learning how to work it is going to be around for a long time.

You also need to remember that email lists target different markets, niches and segments. Just because someone is building a list around "wine bars" doesnt mean hat they are competition if you are targeting wine bars in New Jersey

I don't take much notice of Alexa and don't have their toolbar installed, so I may be wrong here, but I believe Alexa counts the number of times people who have the toolbar installed visit a particular domain.

In that case, as all the emails I get from people who use AWeber have links that are redirected through AWeber's site, I assume that this would massively artificially inflate AWeber's Alexa score.

Alexa sees millions of visits to AWeber, but in reality those visits are simply redirects to someplace else.

As I said though, that is an assumption - does anyone know the truth of this, or am I wide of the mark?
