Using subdomains to cover multiple related niches?

Would doing this still be easy to get good keyword ranking? I figured it would also save the hassle of registering new domains and finding hosting for every individual domain.

So for example you're targeting the auto industry or something...

cupholders.autopartsaccessories.com
carmats.autopartsaccessories.com

Could both of those rank differently and highly for the niche targeted keywords?

    The short answer is 'yes'...

Search engines tend to see subdomains as separate sites, so it's quite possible for them to rank differently. Ranking highly? That's up to you.

If the topics are that closely related, I've also had some success using folders, i.e.,

    autopartsaccessories.com/cupholders/
    autopartsaccessories.com/carmats/

The problem with subdomains is that most hosting options don't have it. So, I have found that using folders work equally well and across different hosting plans.

    Good luck!

    Seconding John on that.

Each page, subdomain, folder, redirection rule you ever use will have its own specific rank based on the content and backlink power it enjoys, among other things.

Search Engines are also aware of subdomains resolving to subfolders, so in practice, it makes little to no difference whether you use subdomains or folders.

At the end of the day, each "page" ranks individually and contributes to the rank of your domain name. There are more strings attached but I feel speaking of them would go beyond the scope of this post.

    Cheers,
    Ange
