How to be Unique AND Profitable with Simple Amazon Tool

7 replies
For those of you who already know about this; great and more power to you. However, "I" just realized this and thought it was crazy-sexy-cool; so, I figured I'd share with those that might not know about it.

Essentially, its a way to leverage Amazon's built-in marketing intelligence to better position your referrals to their site AND without looking like everyone else...fast; (meaning without spending hours and hours researching products to find the right mix).

1. Log into your Associates account at Amazon
2. Click on the Widgets tab
3. On the left hand side you'll see 'Widget Source' (click that)

Now, on this page you can choose from four of their widgets; for the purposes of this post though, just leave it on the default 'Carousel Widget'

Now, look in the Widget Source Template window and you'll see something like this...

<script type='text/javascript'>
var amzn_wdgt={widget:'Carousel'};
amzn_wdgt.tag='YOUR-TRACKING-ID';
amzn_wdgt.widgetType='ASINList';
amzn_wdgt.ASIN='B002ATBEVI,B001RQ9XOA,B00155V210,B0009JR41U,B001 T9NUJE,B0002L5R78,B001GTTEBK';
amzn_wdgt.title='VIZIO VO320E 32-Inch Complete Package';
amzn_wdgt.width='490';
amzn_wdgt.height='200';
amzn_wdgt.shuffleProducts='true';
amzn_wdgt.marketPlace='US';
</script>
<script type='text/javascript' src='http://wms.assoc-amazon.com/20070822/US/js/swfobject_1_5.js'>
</script>
What you want to do is make sure the 'widgetType' is 'ASINList'; this allows you to pick and choose what you want to show in your carousel. But, here's the twist... you don't wanna just pick any old thing; here we can leverage Amazon's market research and list what they say people buy.

Scroll down the page and you'll find a section that says...

Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought

.. and low and behold, there's a proven list of accompanying products to list in your carousel widget.

4. You can right-click (option click for MAC users) and copy the link location

5. Paste each URL into a text editor; like Notepad (or whatever you like to use)
6. Grab the ASIN #'s out of each URL; (the bolded text in the above URL)
7. Make sure you have 'amzn_wdgt.ASIN' in your widget script; you'll have to add it
8. List the ASIN's separated by commas; (as seen above)
9. Set your height and width
10. DONE

Now you have a customized Carousel Widget to put on your site that isn't just a randomly picked list of products AND you didn't have to spend 20+ hours doing research to find the right products to list.

See working example of the above HERE

Have fun with this! I am!

P.S.: Including writing this post, it took me all of 15min to do all this.

    That is neat, but have you seen if they have a tool that will contextually match products with target keywords?

    That is something I would find cool enough to add to my sites tomorrow...

      Bill, they used to offer a contextual tool, but it never really worked very well. I don't see it in the mix of tools anymore.

      tecHead, that's a nice shortcut you got there. It would also work for people looking for additional products to flesh out a review page, or semantically related keywords to use in articles.

      I've never had much luck with widgets. How well does the carousel widget work for you?

        Omakase links are still there and they still suck.

        Omakase; which is funny because that's Japanese for leave it to us; is Amazon's version of their contextual widget. Yet, when I tried it it didn't do too well and my page was so optimized that AdSense didn't even show public service ads.

        Like GameVoid said; it pretty much sucks.

        Very true, John.. the limits of use are pretty much only dictated by your imagination; (and grasp of the concept).

        I've never really used Amazon in a creative capacity, before. Their tools were always a little too rigid, for me. Yet, their recent updates have been rather interesting; like the Carousel Widget.

        I guess how affective it will be will be determined by how they are positioned... how they are incorporated into the page's design/layout; much the same with AdSense.

        The one thing I didn't/don't like about the Carousel Widget is the inability to change the background color. Maybe they'll update it soon enough; we'll see. Until then, you're pretty much limited to putting them on a bright and/or white background.

      Amazon Associates control panel - widgets - Recommended Product Links (bottom left hand corner) - Select a Product Line - Enter Keywords - select your banner size - done.

    I haven't really used the widgets, so I may try this out. It seems simple enough. Good info. Thanks for the step-by-step.
