Newbie - need some deatiled help!

Hi All,

Apologies if this post is in the wrong place, but I'm looking for some help. Oh, and these may well be very basic questions!

I've been aware of the Warrior Forum and been reading internet marketing materials for a few years, but haven't had the time or space to get involved. I've been busy running my business which is a management company in the music industry! I have however realised now that I can use many of these methods in offshoots of my core business and perhaps they will become my core business. Who knows - I'm about to find out!

I have 90% written two eBooks on non-IM topics. One is about how to use MySpace in a particular way for a particular niche audience. I'm really pleased with it and think it will do well. The other is based on our experiences of running a very successful eBay shop, but it isn't really a how to sell on eBay book. Sort of, but different.

I have also been learning how to use Adwords to drive traffic to a sales page for a catalogue product that we sell, so that's three things really!

The help that I need really is a combination of technical and opinion.

1. What service should I use to take orders and deliver the eBooks? I had been thinking that I would use a PayPal account, like everyone does, but have the delivery managed by DLGuard or oneshoppingcart.com as I have seen people do. What advice can anyone offer? What's the best delivery system? I need nuts and bolts!

2. When the payment is made, do these digital delivery services automatically direct the buyer to the download page? Is that download page hosted on my site or the digital delivery provider's site?

3. When the buyer has been redirected to the download page, is that where I should offer an upsell?

4. Should the first email that a buyer gets from the Autoresponder series also have a link for the download? If so, is this a generic link or is it automatically generated somehow by the delivery software?

5. I am just getting to grips with Aweber! Am I right in thinking that it is relatively easy to move someone automatically from a list of people who have signed up to a list of buyers when they buy? If so, how does that work? Or does it just move them to a different Autoresponder series?

6. How do I best cloak affiliate links within the eBooks. I know how to make a phrase - such as 'MySpace' - read on the page of a pdf as an html link to somewhere specific - e.g. mybookaboutmyspace/orderpage- but how do I do that for lengthy and worth protecting affiliate links? Do I just do it the way I know in Word before turning it into a pdf or do I do more in the way of protection.

7. In both cases I intend to offer people a free short report for signing up to my Aweber managed list and then they can buy the full eBook from a link in that free report or from links in my Autoresponder series. Those links will take them to the sales page for the full eBook in each case. Am I missing anything there? Is this the best method? BTW, we are going to be doing loads of other stuff to drive traffic!

8. Different point entirely. In my learning of Adwords, I have set up a terrible sales page for a set of 3 CD's that have always sold well for me. I then direct traffic to that sales page from some terribly worded Adwords. It converts, but at an appalling rate, so I am rewriting it and redesigning it. One of the things I want to do is have an exit pop-up for all the 99.4% of people who click through the Adwords ad and then leave immediately. I am thinking of offering a free low bandwidth download of all of one of the CD's for giving me their name and email address in an Aweber form. This file would be either 16MB or 32MB. Can I deliver that cheaply and easily through one of the services mentioned at 1 above?

That is all for now. I hope this isn't in the wrong place and look forward to any and all help you guys can offer. I am massively excited about finally entering this world and have my fingers very crossed that it will all go well.

Thanks.

Will

    Will,

I am going to answer the questions that I'm sure that I know for you but I won't be able to help you in all aspects...hope this helps.

    For Question 1...

.A PayPal account is almost a complete MUST and since it's free to set up, you should have one just like everyone does. As far as delivery of the book goes, if you have a domain and hosting, I would carry everything on YOUR server and take care of it all. So, build a download page and redirect your buyers to that page after the payment. It is easy to implement this through PayPal so don't worry.

I don't think it's a bad idea to maybe use another shopping cart source and have an optional form of payment for your purchaser. I don't do that so I'm guessing (notice I said guessing) that they will handle all of this for you for a fee of some kind, just like PayPal will take processing fees from each sale.

    Question 2....

As mentioned earlier, I believe that if you use these delivery services, they will host it and take care of it for you for fee of some kind. I am assuming this much but I don't use them so I'm not sure. I believe it is better to handle it all yourself if you can. More control and no additional funds...just time to set it up. Also, if there is a problem of any kind, you will know and be able to handle it asap. If you pay someone else to handle this stuff, they may not be able to rectify the problem as quickly as you can and you might lose a sale. Do your homework there....

    Question 3.....

Offering an upsell there is a good thing to do but you can also offer an upsell in your product. In other words, give them something for $10 and make it good and then offer them a upgrade for more information after they read that one.

I've done this before with success...instead of giving them only ONE upsell offer, I always gave them an option. For instance, I sold a book for $9.95 and made it good. At the end, I gave them TWO options...they could purchase another report for $27 OR purchase that report and get some sweet bonuses for $47.

You can redirect them to a One Time Offer page as an upsell and give them a chance to say no and just go with their original purchase. This works also.

    Question 4....

Your first email should possibly contain a link to grab what they purchased but I would advice you to not do it that way. Instead, make the product available after the purchase and then start the autoresponder with an email to thank them and if they have any questions, comments, or concerns to please email you.

    Question 5....

I use aWeber as well and yes, I believe that you can set it up automatically to move a subscriber from one list to the other after a purchase. I'm not positive but this is a normal thing with almost any autoresponder that I've used...it moves them from what series of emails to another

    Question 6.....

The best way to cloak affiliate links in my opinion, is to host them yourself by using a cloaker that will allow you to use your domain as part of the link. In other words, instead of tinyurl.com/......, it would say http://www.yourdomain.com/whateveryouwant.html.

That way, it just appears as a page of your domain. If you want to know how to get a cloaker that will do that for no charge, message me. Enter the cloaked link through Word like normal and when you convert it to PDF, it will stay the same.

    Question 7......

You are correct there yes but just be sure to treat your email as a subtle way to purchase. The first freebie that you give them should have a way to purchase like you say and in the follow up emails, I always offer them great content in that email and then remind them to check out my ebook and provide a link.

We already know that they are interested in what you're doing or they would not sign up. We also know that it takes about 7 times to ask them to purchase before they will (usually).....that's the whole point of email marketing so just be sure to focus on good content and educate them and asking them to purchase won't appear so much as a "buy my stuff" statement...it will appear as "I'm an authority and this is what I would check out regarding this topic so check it out"....

    Question 8....

I am not sure here but regardless of who hosts and does the delivery, a file that size can be downloaded via a link no problem. I mean, I've downloaded and have used links for several products, some videos, etc....and have never had problems.

    Good luck Will,

    Craig Raphael

Many thanks for that Craig - all very useful. Still looking for any more pointers, particularly on the use of DL Guard or similar.

    Anyone?

I have also created a Free Video Tutorial showing how to create a WSO and integrate Paypal & Aweber. This should help you even if you are not using it for a WSO. Best part is it is a video and it is free. Get It Here

There is one school of thought that a publisher shouldn't bother protecting his or her download page (at least for the low to mid-ticket products).

Reason #1: A protected download page is reliant on scripts which could, at times, fail to work. This equates to more unhappy customers = more refunds etc. The K.I.S.S principle applies here.

Reason #2: People who have no intention of buying your product WILL find to download it for free, whether or not you protect the page.

Reason #3: You can always put an upsell sales letter and email opt-in to convert the traffic that somehow finds your download page.

Its a well known fact that many giants of the industry don't protect their download pages (Ryan Deiss, Ewen Chia to name a few) and they certainly have their reasons.
