What's the Diff Between Pinging Your RSS Feed & Submitting Your RSS Feed to a RSS Directory?

I have been doing some RSS feed submission recently and realized that some of the RSS directories are simply ping my RSS feeds when I hit submit.

I knew there was some kind of relationship between the two factors, but are those two factors serving the same purpose?

I noticed the lack of emphasis on RSS submission products nowadays, could it because Pinging is simply a much faster and efficient method of "Submitting" your RSS feeds to the blog/rss directories?

Would love your opinion on this matter.

Regards,
Ed

From what I underastand about blogging and pinging, when you submit your RSS feed to a directory that directory will always have your most recent posts in its internal search results.

This can bring good traffic, because a lot of people search these places for new posts in their niche. Also you get a backlink from whatever directory you submitted your feed to.

When you ping your RSS feed, you're alerting whatever sites the pinging services serves that new content has been posted. This will bring their robots to crawl and index your post.

Both methods bring traffic and you shouldn't just do one or the other, but both to get the most traction out of your blog's content.

    Hope this helps
