The Best Way to Get Testimonials

What do you find is the best way to get testimonials (aside from the obvious answer: by asking people who have used your product)?

I'm asking because I see offers of free product or some sort of incentive in exchange for a testimonial. Most (if not all) product offers have testimonials and I seem to see people providing testimonials for several related products and they seem to be Internet marketers themselves.

So is it okay for someone to create a product and give it away as an evaluation copy to a select few in exchange for a testimonial?

How about offering an incentive or a means of thanking someone for providing their testimonial (in addition to the free product)?

Would love to hear your ideas.

Indeed ... as do we all. But not openly, in this forum - because it's not allowed here.

Well, it depends what you mean by "ok", doesn't it?

Some people don't like it; others do.

Some people feel that someone buying a product has the right to expect that a testimonial should be completely unincentivized. I must say that if I bought a product on the strength of a testimonial (theoretically only here: I don't buy on that basis, myself), and found that I was disappointed in the product, and then later found out that that testimonial had been incentivized, I'd probably be unhappy about that and feel that I'd been misled. Wouldn't you? Wouldn't most people?

It goes on all the time, of course. It's so widespread, online, I think, for testimonials to be incentivized that personally I tend to take absolutely no notice of them at all, unless I actually know the person who's given the testimonial (in which case I'll usually ask them privately what the product's like).
