Why Aren't You Selling Your Own Product?

Affiliate programs can be very profitable. In fact, I promote several myself. But the bulk of my income, my bread and butter, if you will comes from my consulting and copywriting ventures. Consequently, that's where I focus the majority of my time and energy.

You see, when you promote someone else's products, there is a limit to how much money you can earn. Because regardless of how much money you make, the owner, or source of the product will always take home the lion's share of the profits. For example, some Adsense affiliates are making hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. Yet, that pales in comparison to what Google itself is earning. Why? Because Google is the source of its product. Therefore, it's always going to get the biggest slice of the pie.

That's why it's so important to produce, and sell your own product. That way, you can get the biggest slice of the pie. What? You don't know how to do anything? I beg to differ. Whether you're aware of it or not, everyone of us is born with a talent to do something - all of us. Case in point: I remember growing up, how my sister used to drive me crazy with how organized she was. Everything had to be in its own little nook. Well, we're all grown up, and my sister is just as organized now as she was when we were kids. Only now, she's getting paid to be organized. She runs her own successful virtual assistant service.

Here's another example: I have a good friend who used to do bookkeeping for some of her friends on the weekends. Since she was only doing it part-time, she wasn't making alot of money at it. But it was obvious, she had a real passion for bookkeeping. So I suggested she consider doing it full time. Anyway, she thought about my suggestion, and took the proverbial plunge. Today, she's working for herself full-time as a certified QuickBooks consultant.

The point is, if my sister, and my friend can turn their passions into profitable business ventures, why can't you? You see, it's really not a question of can you do it. It's a question of will you do it?

So will you?

The affiliates like yourself can apply their knowledge to all types of products without the hassle of refunds and all the other nuances of running a business. If google loses its top ranking and yahoo or bing rises those affiliates will still use its same principles. It is the eggs in one basket theorem.

I like your overall idea and conclusion here. I just need to quibble with one thing you stated that's inaccurate....

Google does NOT make the lion's share when it comes to Adsense. Adsense publishers do. At least when it comes to the Content Network. They finally came out earlier this year and announced that Publishers get 68¢ of every $1.00 an Adwords advertiser pays Google. Again, if the ad appears in the Content Network (and not just on Google's pages).

So I'm just clarifying here. Your point is absolutely spot on! I agree 100% with your conclusion and your sentiment.

I'm all for creating your own products - if that's what you want to do. Some people prefer to do the affiliate thing because they can sell many different products without having to lift a finger on support issues.

There are advantages and disadvantages to all business models.

      David,
      Thanks for the uplifting note.

I've worked as a business consultant - though mainly I do more marketing consulting now.

You are spot on. If you have a passion - then just shoot for it. Chances are you'll make it. I've seen more people fail 10 feet from the finish line than actually take the little effort to keep going and succeed.

I recently had this same issue in my life and my wife encouraged me. I started a new focus on internet marketing for local (think small town USA) businesses. Work was a little dry in that area. I was really upset and thinking about what to do next. My wife encouraged me and 1 month later we had an additional $13,000 in sales.

The point: Don't give up. Don't quit.

No there isn't.....at least, not because you're an affiliate. You are only limited by what you can sell.

Because regardless of how much money you make, the owner, or source of the product will always take home the lion's share of the profits.
Wait, I thought you said income was limited. Now you say it's virtually unlimited. By the way, on the stuff I sell as an affiliate, I take home the lion's share of the profit.

But the bulk of my income, my bread and butter, if you will comes from my consulting and copywriting ventures.
So, at it's most basic, you're an affiliate, and you're limiting your income, right? By writing copy for others, they're making the bulk of the profit, right? By consulting for others, you're helping them make most of the profit, right? Why not write your own copy and make all the money selling the product instead of writing copy so someone else can make all the profit? Why not use your consulting skills on your own stuff and make all the profit instead of limiting your profits by making someone else rich?

I consult people to use the products I'm an affiliate for.

    I'm an affiliate to Aweber.....
I'm an affiliate for a hosting company
I'm an affiliate for a designing company

So, you get paid to consult and paid to be an affiliate.
