New Forum - Wierd New User Names?

Hey Warriors,

I recently started a new forum that is in it's infancy, and have had multiple sign ups, almost none of which have ever post anything.

At first I thought it was because the forum was new (and perhaps that's part of it), but what I seem to notice is that most of the time the new user ID's look strange and spammy - and oftenly that goes for many of their email addresses they are using as well when they setup an account.

If they were at least posting (even if it was spam) with these ficticious names it would all make sense, but why would so many people take the time to setup an account if they aren't going to post?

Is it some kind of spam-bot that goes out to online forums and sets up new accounts? It seems like there is some kind of motivation and I'm just trying to figure out what it is...

Your thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Randall

Sounds to me like they are using xrumer or some other software like that to get the names in place so they can spam later. I used to have a forum and that started happening after a bit... sign up, no post and then later post viagra spam and such.

Most likely they are putting links in their profile. Must be xrumer and profilebot.
Do you see the email addresses with russian names or sexi-viagra names??

I am not judged by the number of times I fail, but by the number of times I succeed. And the number of times I succeed Is in direct proportion to the number of times I can fail and keep trying.

They are using the profile to build their back links. Like the person said above they are using some type of program to build profiles.

It is a common practice and is widely used. Is it ethical? Most likely not. But, it is widely used to build back links.

It could be profile forum backlinks. Other then that, I have no clue.

If you use vbulletin, there are plugins to block them. Use a decent captcha (default one is useless) You can also set the forum to moderate first 5 posts for all new users, so they go to moderation queue before appearing (until you find a Plugin that works) unfortunately I haven't kept up with the plugins so I don't know off the top of my head, but there are some good ones that work.

It's probably just the IRS so relax, nothing to worry about. :-)

      Thanks again!
