the best way is to just go to any domain registrar site
such as Domain Names, Web Hosting and SSL Certificates - Go Daddy

and type in the domain in the search. It will tell you right away if the domain is available and if not it will suggest domains you could register instead.

    Karen,

actually, that's the worst way to do it... recently there were several posts about registrars (especially GD) buying quickly the domain you were searching for and trying to sell it to you later for a higher price

Nameboy.com was suggested instead by several warriors...

But I hope big Companies like godaddy will not do that.
Their reputation is everything for them for their business and they would surely not like to sell their reputation just for few dollars.

They do! Did you read my post above? I based what I said on factual reports by other warriors here in the forum.

I use eurodns.com to search for names...also use them as one of my registrar , never had any problems with them snatching names.
Their Bulk and multi tld search functionality is one of the best I have seen.

Theres a bar at the top of your browser that shows what website you are looking at. Highlight the entire URL, and type in the one you want to look for. If theres a page there, it's taken. If not, you may be in luck. It seems crude, but a taken domain name might not yet be indexed by the search engines, so this skips around them, without the hassle of having GD stealing your domain idea and charging you a fortune for it.

Try Domain Samurai I believe it's free. MNF also will let know if the domain name based on the keyword(s) you select.

I would say register.com is the best way to check that up.
