I was wondering what I could do with this type of computer. I also have another similar computer with 3 hard drives and 2 processors just going to waste, all i do is download stuff to it.

    Here are my specs:

2.8 GHZ Quad Core Processor, 8 GB Ram, 1000 GB Harddrive, Windows 7 Premium.

I just use it for simple everyday task

What you should do on your computer depends on what you are into.

    Are you a graphic designer?
    Are you a programmer?
    Are you an article marketer?

You need different kinds of softwares for different kinds of systems you use to make money so I can't suggest anything.

        LOL!

Your computer isn't going to make you any better at IM than the next.

You could be on a crappy compaq thats 7 years old. As long as you can run Word and an internet browser, you have everything you need.

  • I think your super computer is getting a call back from the 80's..

Super computers today, run at pentaflops, cost millions of dollars and can take up an entire room..

Here is a recent Sun Supercomputer cluster.

      Not anymore.

      NVIDIA Tesla Personal Supercomputer

NVIDIA Tesla C1060 Computing Processor - Many Core Supercomputing for Workstations

There are various versions but basically they are the size of a large graphics card. Depending how many slots you have open on your motherboard you can put 3 to 4 in almost any desktop computer.

Cost under a $1k per card. depending where you get it.

They also have a version that is a graphics card combo but the ones in the link I gave above are NOT graphics cards.

These literally turn any, almost any, desktop computer into multiples of super computers.

These cards are wonderful if you are a graphic artist, 3-D designer or modeler etc.

There is actually more and more software coming out that can take advantage of cards like these. Do some research on this technology and you can find some really interesting things, including some inexpensive cards you can get to put in your computers.

      EDIT: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...103&CatId=4044

This link is to the newer tech, 448 cores, 1.03 Tera-flops processing power. This particular card has a DVI out and 3GB GDDR 5 Ram. It actually is a super computer you plug into an available PCI Express x16 slot, and you can combine multiple cards together if you have the room in your computer.

BUT something like that is total overkill and has no benefit at all for most software used in IM like word processors, HTML editors, word press etc.

I can think of a couple of uses for something like that for IM but most software right now can't take advantage of it.

What is your point? You answer a post claiming that supercomputers run at pentaflops, and then talk about a computer doing a mere 1.03 teraflop!?!? According to wikipedia, the TENTH fastest supercomputer is the sun constellation red sky. Its slowest speed is a mere 0.4335PFLOP! But that is STILL 433.5TFLOP! BTW you said yours could be as high as about $1000 per TFLOP. That means this would be worth about $433,500 But YOU aren't including power, cooling, shipping, OS, etc....

HECK, my last boss found it HARD to believe the little 386sx I had did about 3MIPS! That was just UNREAL! In HIS day, THAT was supercomputer performance! TODAY, my little netbook ATOM does over 3400MIPS! According to wikipedia, my little notebook does over 3400MIPS, and over 2.1GFLOPS. For the record, the ATOM is the least efficient family that intel has recently designed.

What difference does it make the kind of computer you have? What you can do with it in terms of Internet Marketing depends entirely on your IM skills ... not your computer.

Nobody needs to drive a Bugatti Veyron. But oh my gosh!! Would I like to.
By the same token, I'm dreaming of 6 terabytes of memory. (I'm starting to have a Tim Allen flashback:confused. I guess some of you would consider my 55-inch monitor overkill, too.

As I slowly return to reality......Okay, maybe a better faster computer won't help my marketing efforts, but still....I guess it's a geek thing.

Do you regularly backup your main system -- the one you use each day?
If that system went down how long until you could get working again? (ie does the whole system have onsite warranty still or is it out of warranty? Is the warranty onsite next day or ship and return say)

Perhaps the spare system could be configured as a fall back system in case your main system becomes unavailable for any reason?
Just load backed up data too it if main system is down.

If the two systems are networked together this should make it easier to manage them IF you are easy with networking or have friends/resources that could handle that for you.

    All the best

My brother fixes computers and these computers where not needed anymore so he gave them to me. I think he said I could use one of as a server but he did not elaborate. I already have a desktop and two laptop computers that I use for IM, I just thought there was something special I could do with this one.

Thanks for the suggestion Dreamshaper. I keep telling myself that I need to back up my files but haven't gotten to it yet.

Can I ask why? I find most of the problems people are having with PC are due to user error or hype theyve heard about PC (omg PC has teh VIRUS!!!:rolleyes. I, on the otherhand, find it very difficult to recommend anyone to a Mac, especially because you pay a ton more $$$ for crappy specs. I will say that apple makes some very beautiful looking laptops though, but they are simply overpriced, IMO.

My Air is my fourth Mac. I never had an error message in the past 9 years. Never once.

The only way to explain it really is that the Mac just WORKS...every time. When I hop on a PC and see the damn hour glass I want to break things.

Youre lucky, my experiences with macs were not the same (unfortunately). Why are you equating gigs to computing speeds? Having more gigs would make the computer snappier and apps would load a bit faster, but I cant see how a mac would be hugely noticeably unless youre comparing a i7 mac to a pentium 4 PC. Theres no "magic" in apple computers that make them "10x faster" than a comparably specced PC. Also, fyi the mac uses THE SAME HARDWARE as PC manufacturers, so a same spec mac compared to a same specced PC is not going to somehow magically be hugely faster. Technically, a mac IS a PC. When I hop on a macbook and I get the spinning beachball , I want to break things. When I get on a mac and I cant play a flash video on youtube without it getting so hot i gotta take it off my lap, I want to break things.

The logic of expensive hardware so I can keep it for 10 years doesn't work for computers (imo). Cars, stereo, knifes, clothes make sense, they will all do the job well after lots of years. In this day and age, computers are advancing so quickly, who wants to be invested for thousands of dollars to a laptop? Apple fans do. 3 years from now when my $500 laptop dies who gives a crap, I will buy 10 times the computer for half the price then. If I paid $2500 for my Mac Pro you can bet I'm gonna keep that baby forever.

Thats just my opinion on it..Its a preference thing and I prefer PCs because I get way more value from them.

If you upgrade to a Mac Pro with 4 quad cores your income will jump automatically by at least another $2,000 a month. It's part of Apple's IM money machine promotion.

If you have an HDMI port, you could hook the thing up to your HD TV and watch all those videos you want to see on a big screen rather than squinting at a normal computer screen.

Working with new software? Port the tutorial video to the big screen while you work on the smaller one...

If you watch regular TV, it could also be a time saver - you can watch a 60 minute TV show in ~42 minutes.

Well, you can do so much with your computer but it totally depends on what you'd like to do with it. It is something you need to ask yourself I guess.
