Paid Video Reviews Here To Stay On WarriorForum?

I am curious about what other warriors thought about this potentially growing trend?

So earlier today I got what appears to be a spammed PM, about one of my products. Usually they start out asking for a review copy, asking if they can work out an affiliate arangement or just say "great job".

This one was a little different however: Here is the short summary taken verbatim from the PM.
-------------------
I am a video marketing expert and I would like to offer my services in exchange for your consent to put an interview I do with you via Skype on my new YouTube channel I have created, and a review copy of your WSO.

I will also do a video review of your course as well which I will happily post on your WSO page and spread the content out to all of the social media sites as well.
-------------------

So I naturally did a little more checking to see exactly who this guy was that was sending me unsolicited advertisements. And sure enough, he just signed up for the Warrior Forum, and has a listing in the warrior forum.

So basically, he wants money in turn for saying good things about people's products and promoting it to his "new youtube channel".

Personally my feelings are, these types of reviews are essentially worthless and can cause more harm than good in the long run. Because, if the product is pure crap - you are not going to hear about that, instead your going to see a talking head telling you how great it is.

And ultimately in the long run, bad products are going to be promoted by these "paid review henchmen", and people are not going to want to purchase anything promoted by them.

Curious to hear other warriors thoughts on these paid reviews, and if they are fairly common place on the forum?

Where did he ask for money? I didn't see that in the message you posted.

It looks to me like he is offering to do the video review for you and post it to YouTube, only in exchange for a review copy. Sending PMs to random people that you haven't "met" yet is probably not the best way of going about it but I don't see anything wrong with his proposal.

  • Well his sales thread was titled "hire me to interview you". And in that he states "I am happy with a percentage on the back end of sales made." ..

So it sounds like he's at least approaching it with getting paid or some type of affiliate commissions. Which isn't all too bad.

So what do you all think?

I think it's spam. You're not the only one he's hit up. Turn him in to the help desk and if they agree it's spam they'll either warn him, give him a temporary ban, or a permanent ban.

I'm in agreement with Dennis. As I didn't receive his PM and don't want it, I can't report him. But you bet your sweet bippie I would report him in a flash for sending Spam. Please take the time and report him Kevin.

      Gosh, that is total crap.

And very spammy to be a new member and PM'ing like that.

And the offer below is very dangerous territory.

I will also do a video review of your course as well which I will happily post on your WSO page and spread the content out to all of the social media sites as well.
Um, so is this review going to be a good review no matter what?

Tina, this in effect is like a paid review.

as you say unsolicited advertisement = spam
I guess video is a 'new' marketing craze so inevitable that 'spam' will move there too.

report to help desk if you feel the approach unwanted.
As someone else worried -- the power of testimonials is likely to be reduced as a marketing tool the more of these paid testimonials(advertorials almost) flood the net.

    just my 2 cents worth

I have tried to get customers to make video reviews before, some say they will do it but actually getting it done is a different matter.

I'd hapilly pay for an honest video review, and if they think its bad so be it. I know the product is very good so I doubt that will be the case.

If I paid someone on this basis would I be in the wrong?

Um, so is this review going to be a good review no matter what?

Tina, this in effect is like a paid review.
I agree, Jill. I didn't see that in the OP. A paid review is like doing a commercial with actors. If anyone takes him up on this, I hope they have all the disclaimers in place to cover everyone's behinds.

  • Sounds good, yeah I went ahead and reported this.. I can understand the guy marketing, heck for the most part we are all marketers in some respect here.

But I don't necessarily agree with how he's going about all this, nor of spamming everyone .
