I currently have the Hostgator "baby" account with about 40 websites. I am thinking about upgrading to a reseller account but I'm not getting much clarification about the difference between the two. I do not want to actually resell any hosting so I'm only looking to add more websites of my own.

It looks to me as if they are both on a shared server. Thus the only difference I see is that with the baby account all of your sites share one cpanel vs each site having its own cpanel with a reseller account.

Is there more of a difference between the two, and if not why would I want to pay more each month for an upgrade?

Your best answers will come from Hostgator. Give them a call.

I think what you've listed is the main difference (price and separate login).

Reseller might also give more disk space and bandwidth, despite the other being allegedly "unlimited".

We just did this question in two threads in the last month.

      The two threads are:
      http://www.warriorforum.com/website-...hostgator.html
      AND
      http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ccount-hg.html

Hope this helps with your question.

That's the thing. Hostgator promises that you have unlimited space and bandwidth with a baby account. Since it is unlimited I shouldn't need to upgrade. But I've read a lot of forum posts and articles stating that the reseller account is the best bet for anyone who wants to build many sites. So I'm a bit confused as to why this is the case.

I suppose calling hostgator would help but I'm afraid they may be a bit biased since it's more money for them if I upgrade...

I want my sites to be stand alone sites and want no problem with running scripts, etc on them - and I want cpanel for each site. That means a reseller account as I don't want to mess with add-on domains.

If you start with the smallest reseller at HG, you can add quite a few sites and then upgrade to the next level easily if and when you need to.
This is from another post Careygee just listed above. Now, this is why I'm confused. What's the difference between add-on domains and creating accounts in a reseller package? They're both on a shared server. So what's the difference? Why upgrade?

I just got off the phone with hostgator and they basically said the only difference between the two is that the reseller package allows each domain to have its own cpanel access. I don't think that's worth upgrading for.

Keep CPU usage, Memory usage and Inodes within limits and you'll be fine, no matter how many domains you're running. Look in the left-column, browse "Statistics" then hover over the ???(question marks). Refresh data when in doubt.

I agree with your conclusion, if all the sites are yours. If you need some of the sites to have their own cpanel access, go with the reseller. For instance if I were building sites for clients, I'd get the reseller so the client could access that site only, even if I'm not actually selling him hosting.

If you're wondering why the price difference, it may be that they have to pay a license fee for each copy of cpanel.

So long as you understand that there is no such thing as either unlimited space OR unlimited bandwidth.

I recently went from Baby to Reseller. Benefits are as follows:

    Seperate Cpanels for each domain!

    Bad points follow:

    Extra $10 a month!

You need to learn WHM and convert your new sites to seperate Cpanels!

Less disk space then the Baby account! (yes less)

Of course having seperate Cpanels does tidy things up so I can't complain.

Reseller: comes with less space and bandwith.

baby : more space and bandwidth.

This is the kicker: host gator told me that if you exceed the resources, all sites will be offline with baby, but with reseller, the site that exceeded the resources only will be offline and rest will be safe.

that is the huge benefit with reseller a/c.

Yepper but the good thing is if that site is down for bandwidth,
you can go to your WHM panel and steal Bandwidth from your
        other sites.
Example: Six or so of your sites use only 25% to 50% of their assigned bandwidth.
        Reduce them by 25% to 30% and add that (6 x 30% = 180%) to
the site that needs more bandwidth.
You are in control of all assigned bandwidth for any site in your WHM.
So the Reseller package has that advantage also.
        Hope this helps.
