Are techniques proprietary

Hey everybody, I was wondering are techniques by mentors such as Tony Robbins, eben pagan etc are proprietary.

The reason I am asking this is because from past few years I have been into stuff like NLP and every type of self improvement and now I want to use them conduct workshops and help people in my region and use them to create a product.

So I want to know can people like bandler or Robbins sue me for using their techniques like swish pattern etc.

I don't believe that either of those people would consider you using well documented NLP techniques as a problem - if you're out there helping people then I'd guess they'd think that's a good thing.

Tony Robbins stuff was all based on Bandlers work in the beginning anyway and Bandler based NLP on modeling what others before him were doing.

It's like asking if someone would sue you for teaching article marketing.

These days a lot of NLPers brand themselves by coming up with new names for existing NLP techniques and branding those new things - If you copied those and used their trademark terms then I imagine they would have a problem with it - but like you said - Swish patterns are just a basic part of NLP - I've been taught them by several people with the assumption that I would use them in my own work so I don't see why anyone would want to stop you from doing that.

NLP is great and it's changed my life and let me help a lot of other people so I wish you well on your journey.

      Hi Anoopchawla,

I know this is the most annoying and undesired advice you can get, but it's also the wisest.

If you're concerned about taking commercial action which could get you sued, it doesn't necessarily hurt to ask for opinion in a forum, but I certainly wouldn't advise it.

What I would advise is to become educated in these things to the point where you're absolutely sure you know what you're doing and that your behind is covered - if necessary to include paying a professional (such as a lawyer) to advise on these things.

No disrespect to the helpful people who have replied - but if you think that you might get sued, then make sure that you won't - that way, you can focus on your project without getting distracted by and worrying about unanswered questions and grey areas.

To clarify my point - you can only really get others' opinions in a public forum - in order to make sure (which is crucial) you need to approach it differently.

Also, a bit off-topic but related:

This is something I've seen often, and again earlier this week. People advertising a seminar or product and asking you to sign a non-disclosure agreement to access the information.

People should know that in this case, a Non-Disclosure agreement has absolutely no legal value as they can only apply to private transactions between two parties - if the offer is made public (aka: you pay for the information), then NDA's are worthless.

It is a common tactic used by people to add legitimacy and credibility to their offers, and try to discourage copycats, but it's another of those false scarcity/secrecy tactics.

Google it - there's a lot of information. When you have specific questions ask again - a few of us here are master practitioners in NLP and can tell you anything you need to know.

Something you've just answered a post about and given legal advice in the process, apparently.

      Here you are.

I feel it's a good tool for persuasion purposes, but don't fall for those "listen to this NLP tape and you'll program yourself to lose weight" kind of products. They don't work as advertised.
