I am thinking about setting up a forum and was wondering about couple of things. What is the best forum platform? SMF? phpBB? others? Can you have plugins for forums like wordpress plugins? I am really after social bookmarking plugins I appreciate your input |

I've used phpbb and vbulletin. Comparing both I wouldn't use anything but vbulletin. It costs a one time fee to get the license, but it's worth it. After all, even Allen switched Warriorforum to vbulletin... http://www.vbulletin.com/ Ralf |

I recommend Simple Machines Forum (SMF) Home of SMF: Free PHP and MySQL forum software Hundreds of plug-ins. VERY, very secure Ive been using it 3 years now without issue. SMF Themes. SMF Theme Site SMF Mods/Plug-Ins SMF Mod Site The forum below in my sig runs on SMF. I have a couple of social plugins that you can see installed on it. |

Another vote for Vbulletin for ease of admin and facilities for users. (Though I haven't used SMF, don't know how that compares.) Vbulletin has a splendid user community that create and maintain a host of plugins. Social bookmarking of threads is part of the basic package; apparently bookmarking individual posts is an option, too... (Anyone have a link to the add-on used here?) |

If you want more than just a simple forum then vBulletin would be perfect. So many plugins for vb that you can do anything with the script. But if you just want a simple forum with no real features phpbb would be the right solution for you. |

Only SMF and Vbulletin can be made SEO friendly without hard coding of the source. I've worked with them all apart from Snitz. SMF is Newbie-friendly and is perfect for SEO in my opinion. Louis |
