Google's competition numbers?

So I am working on a new site, and I was just curious to see how many pages I have indexed so far. I went to G and did a 'site:' query and came up with 66 pages. I didn't know I had that many pages, but if G says so. But I clicked on the last page of results, which was '5' and go down to the bottom and the number was 43.

Now we have all read posts that tell this type of story, but you would think that with a relatively new site, G could count the number fairly easily, wouldn't you? I know I would think that.

But the question arises, to me at least, if G can not figure this out, how the hell do you figure that any of the other competition numbers are any where near right? Why do we even concern ourselves with them.:p

Google is a really smart company in so many ways. But they can't tell you the competition numbers, they can't tell you how many times a keyword gets searched for on their engine, and they can't even tell you the average CPC for their keywords as their two keyword tools will give you different numbers. Do they do this on purpose to confuse us or are they just incompetent in this area?

    Yes they do!

    :-)

So do your numbers mean you have 66 pages indexed, 43 in the main index and the rest in supplemental?

Evidently there is no supplemental index for this, so I would say that 43 are indexed. Which is about the number of pages I estimate I had until I added about six or eight today.

I would not think there would be any supplemental index for this query as everything on my site is original. But who knows, I am not sure how it all works.
