Amazon s3 or another option?

Hi warriors,

I want to make my course available for download and everyone says to use amazon s3 to do it. It looks a bit complex and I am wondering if anyone out there can suggest an alternative.

Thank you!

Take a look at screencast.com. I use it and have not had any issues. Very affordable and easy to set up.

Amazon 3 is not very user friendly.

Let me ask you: are you making your course available online (as in 'streaming'?) or are you just making it available for download?

If you're just looking for a safe place to host your course, and it's just for download, then Amazon 3 is overkill.

    Take a look a eJunkie.com

If your course is going to be available for streaming there is quite a god option that means you do not get billed per amount of data transferred.

I use Vimeo plus, you can check it out using Google (im not affiliated or anything) however they have a feature where you can only stream your videos on one specific site, for example one domain, and it shows an error message if anyone trys to put it on other sites. You can fully customise the player so it only shows a play button etc.

However I always use Amazon s3 for things such as PDF's so if its video streaming content then check that vimeo out, but anything else I think Amazon s3 is the way to go!

      Hope this helps!

Hi I'm a little confused by Amazon S3's pricing as well. So what exactly will be charged and what won't?

I found this link: Amazon Simple Storage Service FAQs

But it doesn't say anything about streaming videos. So for example, I upload a 100MB file to S3 to host, I will be charged on the amount of data that I upload to the S3 server in addition to the monthly storage charge correct?

So if I stream that video on my website, is it free or does that constitute as data out and I have to pay for every bit of data that is streamed?

As far as pricing, it's all based on usage, so really if you want an easy estimate... just upload what you're thinking of, download it a few times and see what it costs you. It'll only be a few cents, but you can multiply that out by the number of downloads you're expecting.

As to actually managing the files. There's a good, free extension for FireFox that makes it super simple. I think it was called S3Fox from memory... Ah, just found the (non-commercial/affiliate) link. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir.../3247/?src=api

Thanks Bildeberg. But what about video streaming? After I've uploaded my videos to S3 and embed the video on my site for streaming, is the streaming data considered as chargeable by Amazon?

The program, Amazon S3 Flow Shield makes uploading and organizing a whole lot easier and S3 is dirt cheap to host videos. I agree, it's complex, but once I got Flow Shield, it got a lot easier.

      Hi Alexio

I purchased Easy Video Player when it first came out earlier this year and it has made the whole process of integrating video with Amazon S3 an absolute snip.
The whole package is well thought out and the creator Josh Bartlett and his team give very good support.

He does tend to bombard you with affiliate and EVP upgrade emails, but if you can survive that the EVP products are well worth a look.

I use the Firefox add on that someone mentioned above. It makes the S3 process real easy.

You just drag what you want over to your bucket. Then you right click and select 'edit the acl' and make sure you click the X under 'Read' for users to make it a green check mark.

then you right click it and copy the url to clipboard.

        that's it.

I know someone that used S3 for major video events, and are streamed to tens of thousands... and it cost him something like $20. A pretty good deal. Another friend tried to host himself, and got kicked off one host, and on the second one lost out on TENS OF THOUSANDS of leads because the site crashed with the traffic he got. Definitely finding off site hosting, be it S3 or Vimeo is a must!

So does this mean streaming videos is still chargeable by Amazon? Does anyone know?

So anyone knows? Is the streaming data of your videos hosted on Amazon S3 chargeable?

Yes. Amazon charge you for both storage and then download bandwidth used (which includes "streaming" video).

Thanks Andy. So if thousands of people view your video, wouldn't that chalk up a huge bill at the end of the month?

Tribros, this is interesting. Have you try this and have any experience with them? If I host my files there with mediapro, does my customer have to go through their regular download page with the countdown or they can directly download the files?

Everyone sais Amazon S3 is complex, I have found it very simple - using the Firefix S3 organizer I have found uploading, organizing and linking to files in "buckets" (their language for folders) quite easy. One thing I always forget is to set Access Controls so my customres can view the videos - but that is a 5-minute fix.
