I just got the weirdest email

I just looked at my email and saw a new one with the subject line of 'Thank you for your payment' and as I had not made any payments I obviously became suspicious. The details of the email are below:
from: orders@locepal.com (this domain is not online)
order no 151471
download no 18811881
Thank you for payment
for downlod book plz click here
h**p://up.dreameer.com/files/gen/xjlLm_gfKF/here.zip

I didn't go there and am not about to. If some twit thinks I am going to download a zip file and click on some executable is crazy to say the least. I have got too many of these from UPS and FedEx about my lost or undeliverable packages to fall for this dumb trick.

Nice another trojan to add to my collection.

It wasn't supposed to be a link, but I made a mistake when I posted it. I edited the link out of it.

That's because you click links you shouldn't be clicking. OP should of done due diligence to keep that from happening. These things are viral enough without spreading them ourselves on WF.

I have been getting similar emails with subject that make you very curious.

      The subject are:

      • You have received payment
      • Warning
      • Important information inside
      • Cancellation noticed
      • You have won ...
      • Transfer completed
      • Account activation was successful
      • Congratulation
      And so on...

These emails always lead you to some sort of link you need to click to find out more information which I have not done but the subject is designed so that it will at least make you open the email.

These emails were once coming only from scammers and were easily picked up by anti-spam software, but so-called legitimate marketers are now using some of these headings. The only way to get the message through to them that it is unacceptable is to unsubscribe, blacklist their email address and refuse to do any business with them.

Yes I get quite a lot of money left to me in wills - it's just amazing how many people want to leave me money!

I actually got a letter in the mail the other day stating that Mark Polomka and all his immediate family had died and since they could find no other immediate family and I have the same surname that all his money is being left to me.

That was weird, I get the emails all the time but this was the first time I'd received an actual letter and the use of the name. I wonder how much success they have with this stuff, how many people actually fall for it and hand them over their bank details.

Never download these things. Just delete. Don't let curiosity get the better of you. Always make sure who is sending a file before opening it.

Nothing to worry about that one was a windows trojan only
Most of these email scams/cracks are windows targeted usually only when they "know" you have a mac they send mac trojans

I've had a rash of 'Thank You For Your Payment' e-mails recently too. Over the last week, 'Your Order Is Complete' has been even more popular. I don't even open any of them. I'd just assumed that some self-appointed 'guru' somewhere has been telling people that it's the kind of subject line that gets attention and puts money in the bank. Maybe it does, but not mine. I'd swear that it would only take one of these 'leaders' to say that 'Your Knickers Are On Fire' is a profit-pulling subject line and there would be enough lemmings believing him to have my inbox aglow with blazing gussets the following week.

Maybe it's just me, but I stopped seeing these things as weird ages ago. 'Original' is becoming much more unusual though.

Haha... of all places to link back to.

I googled "locepal.com ?" and this was the first link to show up.

But yeah - I received the exact same e-mail with a slightly different subject link a little bit after midnight.

I'd say that it's amazing people still think others will fall for this. However, the continued use just goes to show that many people indeed do.

Kind of like ridiculous warning labels. You know there was more than likely some very unhappy person that wrote those companies with precisely that issue.

It can also mean that someone is trying to get people to open his or hers product and click on their affiliate links in their file.

I would delete it and move on.

In case you are wondering what happens if you do click the link, here is one of the awesome little programs you will get.

    AVSecuritySuite

This has to be one of the most insidious virus trojans I have seen in awhile as it attempts to mimic legitimate virus protection programs, while at the same time continuously sending your browser to porn web-sites. It also does one other very nasty thing: It disables programs like "Process Explorer", the command line box, the task box, and the regedit so you cannot remove this beast. It also removes your ability to use your browser to go to sites to download fixes!

What do you do if you got this?

You shut your computer down and reboot it in safe mode plus network, then go online and download a program called "
combofix" which will allow you to remove this little bugger.

You will be frustrated and you will spend a good hour or two - the problem is, Norton and MaCafee do not detect this (as of last month when I removed it from a friends computer).

What you should do is download combofix now and have it ready, then you can just use it if you happen to get one of these sorts of viruses that pose as legitimate software.

combofix.org is where you can get it.

    -DTM.

Sometimes i got hacked even though i have anti-virus on. Happened twice and those were critical. One time i had to reset my whole comp to it original. The second time, luckily i had some knowledge how to deal with these bad software. I was able to disable and uninstall it.

It's just some killer headline texts. I rather see a PDF file than an exe. file.

PDF files are legitimate files. Exe. files are more likely to manipulate your comp since it is free source and from unknown.

We've actually been getting a lot of users here at work who are getting emails that look like they're coming from eFax. The attachment is a zip file and when the user opens it the icon LOOKS like a pdf but it has an exe extension. Just be aware that this is going around also....just because the icon looks like a pdf doesn't mean it's a pdf...check that extension...

As obvious to most of us that these are scams its sad how many folks still get taken in by these

I saw a documentary on catching online "scam" predators and some people really do get taken for a ride by these creeps

That said has anybody seen the HBO comedy "Flight of the Conchords"?
Their hapless manager uses their band fund to give a loan to a prince from Nigeria , they tell him its a scam and he says something like "The Internet is one of the most trusted sources in the whole world these days why would anyone scam me" etc etc
