Lets look at it from a different point of view.

If you go to Google and type in your search, you find a bunch of websites related to you are looking for, depending on how unique the content is, how good the SEO is, and how many backlinks the site has.

If you go to Yahoo and type in your search, you are brought to a list of websites related to what you are looking for, but each of those websites had to pay to be listed.

Would you rather have content that is unique, and have a better chance of finding what you are looking for? Or would you want to find information that someone is paying to be seen?

You're thinking about the old Yahoo directory, not their search results. You don't have to pay to be in their search results - except, of course, all the money you pay to get backlinks to your site.

  • Google or Microsoft. Monopoly? Of course they are... but what can you do? Is anyone going to search anywhere else?
