Many people use Open Office to create an ebook. The software is free, and information on how to get the most out of it is readily available on the internet.

From my point of view, and this is only my opinion, the greatest control you will have with your ebook layout designs is by using a word processing program such as Word or OpenOffice Writer.

So, I would say, skip the generator and keep doing things as you are doing if you want full control over your layout designs.

Plus, I don't know of any off hand, so I'll leave that to other Warriors to suggest.

    All the best to you!

OpenOfice is my choice too - although if you prefer to use another word processing software (MS Word, say) or a DTP package you can convert your work to a PDF using software like Cute PDF - but I'm not sure if your liks would be "clickable" that way.

It's easier to just create your PDF in MS word then convert it into PDF.

For conversion I use PDF Primo: PDF Converter — #1 Free PDF Creator — PrimoPDF

    Enjoy!

I'd also prefer open office because it's also compatible with mac.

If you are looking for templates, you can try EZ Ebook Templates it has quite a few good templates for use.

You can actually create a very pleasing, professional design within MS Word - focus on headers where you can import a small logo, create a top margin line or top margin graphic, add in images into your ebook, begin chapters half-way down the page, use drop caps to begin the first paragraph of a new chapter. You can also add footers with your title, baseline graphics, etc...

We have had dozens of templates created for our own info products and our members, you can find others on the MS office site or have them made for you on freelance sites.

I use MS Word, actually an old version - Word 2000. I bought Office 2000 way back when and never saw a need to upgrade.

I downloaded the free Cute PDF Writer. With that, you can send anything to 'print' and it will convert to a PDF.

      Was wondering about this also...

I want to be able to edit my PDF once it is converted. Looks like that might be possible with Primo PDF? I currently have PDF995 and not impressed. Once you convert from Word, no editing.

Or I will take advice from other poster regarding setting it up in Word with headers, footers, drop caps, etc.

I don't konw if there is an actual tool to create ebooks. I usually just write it and arrange it in a word file and then convert to pdf. There are many free tools online but I use pdf factory to be able to encrypt my files and password protect while setting restrictions no copying and pasting.

word gives you the most flexibility and template options, you can download many from MS. If you need to alter things afterwards just keep the original word doc and change it there, re-pdf (new word!) and away you go
