Trying to get my head around BuddyPress!!!

Hi guys,

OK, I'm looking to create a networking/community site. I've looked into a few different platforms and am keen to continue working with WordPress, as I know it fairly well and am comfortable with it.
BuddyPress has been recommended to me to use in conjunction with WordPress, and I'm a tad confused. Is BuddyPress a stand-alone platform? How does it work with WordPress? I know it's created by the same team, but as I said, I'm just a little confused.
I have a specific WP theme I want to use and have the networking capabilities BP offers, I'm just confused about how they work together?
I would love to hear form anyone who's used or is using this combo, or if anyone can point me to some examples.

Cheers,
Sissy

    Hi Sissy,

Buddypress is a Wordpress plugin - so you just install your blog and install the plugin. I have a Buddypress site that I just recently created at Work From Home Aussies | Home

Feel free to sign up and have a poke around. Mine is pretty much a 'default' setup - I still have quite a bit of work to do on it.

Thanks for that Gary, much appreciated!

Is you site's theme a WordPress theme or a BuddyPress theme? I think this is where my confusion stems from, as most other WP plugins don't have their own themes being designed & developed, as is the case with BuddyPress.

      Cheers,
      Sissy

Yep - it's a BuddyPress theme (BuddyPress Widget Theme 1.2.1). There are quite a few themes around though - I'll probably end up getting one from buddydress, com. They have a $9/mth subscription where you can download their 15 themes. I'm sure there are some other good themes around as well at a reasonable price.
