Linkin building structure

One of our sites has started ranking for keywords weve been after, but the wrong pages are now ranking!
For example, weve been going after a brand name, to a manufacturers page with all the child products under that category....BUT some of the products with in the category are showing up in the serch results!
(example - manufacture name is widgets, containing blue, green yellow and pink widgets, when some one searches for widgets...we come up 3rd for blue widgets, where as we want the widgets page to show!)
So what would you do?
Keep linking to the manufacturer pages (as that what we want to rank for so make sense thats where the traffic should end up).
Link build to the (product) page which have already ranked, because getting the manufacturer pages to rank over the current ranked ones will be to hard?
Or something else? Ive got a feeling weve done something wrong here but cant put my finger on it, we are getting ranked well, but for the child pages rather than the parent!
Your thoughts and help are appreciated as this one has baffles me a bit and i dont know which strategy to adopt.
