how well do double optins work with aweber?

HI --

Just wondering -- I was doing a bit of a test with aweber for one of my sites, and within a few hours had 14 signups. However -- I only had 4 of those people actually click the double opt-in link.

Does this mean that aweber is not delivering (i.e., ymail/gmail/yahoo), or people just don't take the time to click on a double opt-in link?

What has your experience been? I am thinking of trying a different provider as well...

Thanks

People are just not taking the time to double opt-in. But that's ok because you will only have those people on your list that really want to be on it. Those will be the ones that may purchase from you in the future. It weeds out the freebies seekers that probably won't do you any good having them on your list anyways.

Now one thing I was wondering though...

If I did do 'single-opt-in' (which I guess aweber can do as well as some other services) -- wouldn't that be better -- in that perhaps they just didn't take the time to read the first one, but would read the 2nd, 3rd, etc?

Or would there be some reason not to do that?

Depends on the nature of product - I would suppose in an IM product double opt-in would reduce spam, and in other information products too it may be a better option for various reasons, but when it comes to physical products I have wondered quite a few times too whether I should change my double opt-ins to single ones. Since I have not been into autoresponder for too long a time anyway, this is something I am yet to test and try.

Nope i don't think it's okay to have a double opt-in unless people are signing up for let's say a forum and you do not wish they enter any bogus emails.

Always use single opt-in when building your list. Even if 10/14 of them are not responsive, at least there is chance they will read your email if they one day decided to click it.

With a bigger list, you could do a lot of things like JVs etc.

WSO: I PROMISE/GUARANTEE you that this will be the LAST WSO you will ever need to purchase!

Here's the thing. The above may seem too good to be true but all I can say is there isn't even 1% hype or BS in the above sentence. This WILL BE YOUR LAST WSO to purchase.

Aweber are probably delivering the emails. They have one of the best delivery rate and very spam cautious. the issue is people are too lazy to confirm it.

Personally, I think double opt-in will beget a higher quality list. You guarantee several things:

    1) The person gives you a real email address.
    2) Your delivery service can actually make it through to them.
    3) The actually check it.

All others...worthless to you...I love watching people enter 2-3 bogus email addresses until they finally try a legit one...

Have you checked your stats to see which country the 14 sign ups were from?

Sounds like they could have been bots signing up.

If you want longevity in your business and you want to be reputable then always go for double optin.
All it takes is one of those single opt-in subscribers to complain to your hosting company and you'll get shut down, especially if you look at the latest Google policies.

What you want is quality subscribers in your list, and you'll find that those that fail to double opt are generally tyre kickers.

Thanks, due to the nature of the signup, I am 99.9% sure none of them are bots. Also, the way it is setup, they can't really 'spam' it.

So far now (in about 24 hours) I've had about 43 people sign up, but only 24 actually do the double opt-in. (And wierd thing is 4 of those opted out once they got what they needed, i.e., a freebie. Would that be considered normal?)

      Thanks

Choose double opt in. Anyone who doesn't double opt in is probably not worth having on your list and likely to be unresponsive to future mailings which is no good for you, nor any future JV partners. Serious subscribers who are genuinely interested in what you have will know to double opt in, they'll know to look in their spam folder too if they dont see the confirmation mail in their intended folder.

As for immediate opt outs, that's quite normal. Many people just sign up for the freebie and are not really interested in anything more. I do it myself a fair bit.

That's why you never use double opt in. Don't listen to the people here. All the big guys use single.

I get about 5% who don't confirm their subscription. Your sample is still pretty small so expect the % to drop. I send them to the aweber video after subscribing to show them where to expect the confirmation message.

Only a few unsubscribe after receiving the product though.

You could try offering something of much greater value than an eBook. Especially in IM, it has to be an extremely good eBook to have a high conversion rate. If you can offer something like software or a video course series which you coulds reasonably charge money for on Clickbank or WSO, then the offer is good.

The most important part of your landing page is your offer. This is more important than all the other elements put together.

On the confirm page, appreciate that they have to take extra time to wait for the confirm email to get to their inbox and offer an extra incentive for them to go and confirm their email. This will increase your verification rates.

On the other hand, there are plenty of bigger names out there who originally built their initial list on single opt in. The responsiveness of the list will be determined by your ability to build a relationship with your list and the quality and value of the offer they signed up for.
