Click Through Rate of 0.32%

Hi All

I am hoping someone can provide me with some advice on my click through rate, and let me know if it is really bad. My stats for last month are below:

Page Impressions: 52,984

Clicks: 167

Page CTR: 0.32%

Page ECPM: $1.12

Earnings: $59.25

My keywords are probably "Horse", "Racing", "Jobs" and my domain is www.racingjobs.com.au

If you have any advice on my stats or what I could be doing to improve them, please let me know.

Cheers

Jake

Look at your ad copy... Does it focus on customer benefits? Does it stand out in the crowd? Does it entice people to view your sales page?

It does not matter how good the placement for your ad, if your ad falls short of the goal of attracting readers and generating clicks to your website...

You're CTR is poor with your current ad placement in my opinion. Without proper testing, there is a few things that I personally would do without making any drastic changes to your placement, or trying new spots for your adsense...

Firstly, your ads are only partially targeted. You currently have your adsense set to show both graphic and textual ads, which in this case isn't a good idea. You should immediately remove the graphic function in your ad settings. The reason for this, is that those ads are completely irrelevant to your site, and they are showing a good percentage of the time, which is directly affecting your CTR.

Secondly, you should take advantage of using the adsense targeting tags. This will help Google to focus on areas that contain the keyword that you want to target, without Google considering unnecessary areas of your site as part of your adsense campaign.

I would also offer a third suggestion... To add an additional 200x200 block directly below the other on the homepage. Make sure that this block is also free of graphical ads.

This should be a good starting point for testing for you. Also remember, that you shouldn't ever stop testing your ad placements. You should never truly be satisfied with your CTR. You would be surprised what kind of placement that you could come up with that could drastically affect your income from any site. If you want to know how often you should test, I generally test sites after 1k UV; therefore, changing ad sizes, colors, and placement every 1k visitors or so. Sometimes you'll move backwards, and other times, you'll see a pleasant increase. Though, in the end, it's up to you to decide what's best for your site and schedule.

This is just my opinion but your CTR is probably right in line with what you should expect considering what your page is about and what the ads are about.....

Why are people coming to this page? Chances are they are coming to look for a job or to place an ad...not buy a horse, not to look at scores.

If you were going to monetize this page & expect a better CTR, you would need to match the offer with the reason why someone is viewing the page. Currently, your ads are untargeted.

I am involved in the same field & like many others, it is very competitive. Your CTR is exceptionally low & you have to seriously look at this problem. Have you looked at other sites in the racing market & the general layout of their websites? It could make a difference to your click through, If you make whatever changes are required.

To look at your website's keywords simply click page on the top right hand side of the page & then view source, this will tell you what your keywords are in your title tags.

I believe that for CTR of 5% is the industry average. It is 4% for conversions. At one time Google would kick you out of adwords if you did not have a CTR of 0.5% or more. This is seen as a bare minimum. Typically, my CTR is near 5%, with a 10% max.

To increase conversion write some compelling copy. Make your users want to click to find out about your service. Customers love a mystery so do not give it all away.

      Hey SEOBro,

But did you look at his page? It is nothing but a job board with a couple banners on the side and in the header....it is hardly optimized and way too many places to click....and all the places where a normal person would click would be the job listings...because they are looking at a job.

I have played around with text ads on popular blogs and I can tell that for the most part, using this type of framework, your CTR goes down because the competition are the other links all around. In some cases, I have seen ads get as low as .4% CTR. So, while 5% may be the industry average (which I doubt) for CTR, you have to factor in what the person is coming there in the first place for, where the offers are placed on the page & how targeted those offers are to the needs of the visitor.

One of the things I would do that should immediately improve CTR is place the leaderboard ad in your header right above the job listings.

If you can, every 5 listings, place a TEXT ad into the job listings board itself. Make the ad look more like a job listing....with an offer that get help them get what they are hoping to get......(hint...hint...)

    Hey SEOBro,

First, place a 160x200 Skyscraper on the right-hand side. The current items should go below this ad. The ad should have a white border and background with a default blue title. The text and url should be black. This way the ad looks like part of the normal navigation and doesn't stick out as and ad. I promise that your CTR will increase. Set the ad to display text only, also use two 160x200 Skyscraper ads stacked together. The reason is because your job listings are lengthy and you want visitors to see long column (400 pixels) of ads, as they read from left to right. Since, it's free to place a listing, your not losing any money by not having your free job listing box at the top.

I hate when people's talk because they don't have nothing to do.... when you give your opinion...give it good.... some guys that posted here...not even looked on the SITE!!!

He doesn't sell a product, he earns with Adsense...so it's NO Sale Pitch!!

And...your CTR is so low because :

1.Your ad placement is bad. You must put the adsense on every page, before you write the job, you put your adsense up...and not just on the right side bar.

2.This is a possibility.Your traffic is not related with the advertising from Adsense...so people's are not interesred to click the advertising.I said ...the second option is just a possibility.
