Should I ask my users why they leave so soon?

Well, all of us know the struggle to increase bounce rate, and we all know there are tons of methods to do so, but...

what do you think about putting an exit script that will pop in the event the user is leaving in less than 5 seconds asking him why he does that?

Did anyone here try it?

And I'd love to know if there is such a script ready (free or for sale).

Thanks!

    Thats true.

But imagine that 5% would answer and even if 1% would give good informative answers- "we thought you also sale large size t-thirts" - that could be the difference between a profitable shop to a losing shop, isn't it?

I guess I will lose some future-potential costumers, but wouldn't be worth it to learn why those x% that are searching for my exact keyword are leaving my site in less then 5 seconds??

Personally, I want high bounce rates....I want them bouncing right off my site and to whatever it is I am promoting....

In marketing, the content is the carrot. If you want readers, you are a blogger. But most of us want those bounces to go to an ad or an offer.....

Well, if they click your affiliate link after 2 seconds they're on your site maybe its good (we can argue on that), but if they LEAVE your site in less than 5 seconds than something might be wrong.

Again, I'm not searching for the regular "optimize your page/split test" kind of thing, since I already do it, I just wander if the "stupid" approach of simply asking my users why they leave might work??

It depends on the style and purpose of your website.

If it is an authority website where they can find hot info content on the topic then you would want them to stay and read the stuff.

For a squeeze page where you want them to decide quickly and opt in or out then you can perhaps want them to land on that site and decide quickly, so they quickly make the decision.

Which is the same for shorter pages where you have a redirect link to
another page (affiliate link for eg), where you might expect them to land on the page quickly and make the decision to click the link.

So it depends on the purpose of the page really, hence you are Not weird!

I thought a 'bounce' meant the back button to the search engine or wherever they came from. A click on a page link is a conversion (action) no matter how long it takes? (you certainly do not have links to things you do not want them to click... I assume?)
