What's an RAR file please?

I purchased a WSO yesterday which when downloaded arrived in an RAR file which I can't open I just get a pop up windows message that says unable to access along with a bunch of other text.

I emailed & Pm'd the vendor with no reply so far, thought someone in here may be able to help. Thanks

It is like a zip file.

You can use 7zip to unzip the file.

    7-Zip

It's a compression format. Often used for video.

You can unzip it with 7-Zip

    It's free.

Ok I've downloaded that but the file still doesn't open. Why can't it just be in a winzip file instead of being so damn difficult!!!!??

      Hi Alice,

I'm not sure what age your computer is but if it's a PC you may be able to just right click it and scroll down to extract and click on that to extract it. It should put the unzipped folder in the same location.

      Hope that helps.

        Hi Alice,

This is a good opportunity to learn something and to get used to doing research.

If you want to make money in IM you will need to be a problem solver. Things like this is a great example.

        Google is your friend.

If I have a problem I start with google.

Well, winzip can't open files! In fact, there is NO winzip format! MAYBE you mean ZIP, which is opened by infozip, which winzip can be a frontend for?

But ZIP is not a native windows format, EVEN though it predates windows. BTW zip isn't perfect. HECK, it has a LOT of methods to try to APPROACH perfection, and they are constantly being added. a zip file created today to be efficient may not be recognized by an unzip routine written 10 years ago.

ALSO, they were saying this with ARC! They were saying it with the compressed files. Zip wasn't the first, and wasn't the last.

I prefer to use winRar to unzip my files. but to each his own...

winRar is available for free at download.com
yes, it's shareware so it will ask you for money, but it doesn't require any and paying money does not give you any extra features, it only makes it stop asking for money. I've been using winRar for over a decade now and it's the very first program I install whenever I get a new computer.

it's been many years since I tried 7zip. maybe it's time I try it again... any opinion on 7zip vs winRar?

I've managed to open it finally through trial and error plus a fair bit of cursing! Thanks for all your replies.

RAR is another format for compressing files. Something like zip. You can use WinRAR or 7zip for compressing or extracting your files with RAR compression. And as i have tested many times, RAR files are more compressed comparing with ZIP ones.
