Google Keyword Discrepancy?

Can someone give me an idea about what is going on? I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist but I did a search through Google keywords to get the global and local average search volume on a keyword phrase. When I went back five days later and did the exact same search on the exact same keyword phrase the numbers that Google reported were unbelievably different! I mean one keyword phrase went from an average local search volume of 74,000 down to 5,400. Another one went from 33,100 down to 2,400. I went back a double checked spelling and everything I can find. I downloaded the results both times so I have it in black & white. Am I being paranoid or am I missing something?

    It's just Google - you'll probably never know why they were different, and they'll probably change again.

    Unless they just updated their index and there's been a drop in those searches since they last collected data for that metric.
