I've run into a snag that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I launched an in-house affiliate program. Here's the trouble- I need to collect 1099 forms. Not a big deal on a big network- it's integrated into the process But I'd like something I can have my affiliates fill out on their computer and send to me over the internet- without ever touching a piece of paper. The IRS was as helpful as their reputation would make them seem to be. Thus I'm still in the dark. I asked my affiliate tracking provider and they had no idea what I was talking about. I don't want to put my merchant in hot water with the IRS.

Does anyone have a 1099-misc form that can be filled out on a computer? Or does anyone know where I can get one? I'm dying under the weight of the bureaucracy here.

Thanks!

I may be misunderstanding your question, but it sounds like what you need from your affiliates is a W-9 Tax Form which is a Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification.

If so, here is one you can send to your affiliates that they can fill out and return to you

The 1099-Misc is something you would send to them should their earnings be $600.00 and over.

Nope- you're right- that's what I was looking for (I'm feeling sheepish- I work in law and can't get this one straight). Is there a way for affiliates to fill this out electronically? Most people don't have printers, let alone fax machines anymore.

Also- I'm still curious how to handle foreign affiliates.

        Thanks everyone!

I might have answered my own question. But it leaves me with a different one. I'm sure there are other affiliate managers on this forum- can anyone tell me if there's anything other than a SSN/Tax ID that needs to be on the 1099? Also- if the affiliate is not in the United States, how have you guys handled ensuring the IRS is happy? Do they need to do 1099s as well? I realize that the best thing to do is ask an attorney or cpa, but the ironic part is that I won't have the money to do that until I get this going- at which point, it would be best to already have that information socked away somewhere.
