How Many Email Subscribers Do I Need Before I Can Start Making Money Already!?!

In early 2010, I launched a blog/website with the intent of building up my own online business.

I had been doing SEO consulting successfully on my own for a couple years at this point, but I didn't want to be just another SEO guy that didn't even have his own web property.

In short, it was time to start working for myself.

So I created a website around a topic that both inspired me and I had expertise in: search-engine optimization consulting.

After selecting a niche, picking a domain name, setting up a website, and all that other fun stuff I began collecting email opt-ins to identify visitors that might be interested in getting involved with SEO consulting or starting their own full-on business.

And slowly, the email opt-ins started coming in...

The only problem was I didn't know how big of a list I should have before launching my product.

I didn't want to short change myself by not building a big enough list and then feel disappointed because so few people wanted my product. But I didn't want to spend a year (or more) nurturing a list without making any offers either.

From what I'd read online from numerous list building experts, they recommended having some pretty big numbers before launching to their lists:

Yaro Starak (One of my favorite marketers by the way), said I should get AT least 5,000 people on my list before doing a product launch and making money.

That seemed like way to long for me to wait. Especially when I wasn't even sure there was a demand for my product.

After a few months, I had about 200 email optins and decided it was time to launch my product.

There are a few reasons I decided to launch at 200 opt-ins:

  1. I figured if I can't get even one sale out of 200 people, this probably isn't a niche I should be in.
  2. I've read a few internet marketers say that a 1% conversion rate for an email list is pretty average. Since I had 200 people, the law of averages says I should probably get one or two of those people to buy.
  3. I had to find out if there actually was a demand for my product.... sooner rather than later.

Results: I released the product for only 2 days. The product was priced at $87 and was able to sell just over $600 worth of my business kit to a list of just 200 people.

I plan to do my second launch in October with what is now a significantly larger list (although I'm still not up to that 5,000 mark yet).

I hope this has helped out--or at least entertained--someone else in the process of building their email list. If anyone else has experience building up a big list for a product launch... at what point do you launch your offer?

The list size really isn't that important for say. Other then the bigger the list you have the more money you could potentialy make. However I have made money from list less then 300 people. Depending upon how targeted your list subscribers are depends on how responsive your list will be. Also if you are using the 7dollar tactics to build your list. Then you subscribers will be more willing to buy from you in the future vrs just giving them a warm up free report.

I wish you the best of luck on you campaigns and your business.

very well said. It all depends on how you added those subscribers to your list. Where did they come from and how did they end up on your list is more important than the size.

You basically contact other marketers with in your niche offering then 100% commissions on your $7 report. In turn they build your list and they build there pay pal accounts. The script also cost $7 to get started but its worth it. Just think about it you are more then likely giving the report away for free anyhow so why not charge a measley $7 or less for it. Then get others to promote it for you. Talk about win win you are building your list they are making more money. From the visitors they where already getting.

Wow, I'm shocked how profitable your list is. That means $600/200 you're profiting at average $3/person. Average is $1 I believe.

I have a list of 550 and I'm making a loss so far. The reason is I don't send much products or affiliate offers to my list. I mainly send adswaps and my facebook fans product. I guess they must have gotten tired of it.

I'm trying to push the sales thuogh so I can flip the product. Any suggestions what I can do to perhaps freshen up my list to be as active as yours?

Do as I mentioned above with the $7 script instead of giving away your report charge $7 and give other marketers 100% commissions so that they will help build your list. Being sure to tell the marketer a good place to add your 7$ product is their thankyou page.

@petevamp... I've never heard of that strategy before, but I like it. I might make a separate and smaller product in the future to try that one. My current product has taken too much effort and is too massive to give away.

@SimonCruise.. Thanks for the tips. I like the 500 goal. Nice round number, but not so big that it's overwhelming.

@HumbledMarket... I've been trying to get into the habit of sending my list something new every week. It's tough to stay motivated with this sometimes, but I think it helps encourage people to open since it isn't always a product offer or advertisement.

It's very similar to what Dave Navaro (not the guitarist) does over at his site... Just sends out timely emails each week and occasionally drops in product offers with it. In fact, I've tried to mimic him in a lot of different ways.

Oh and on average each subscriber you have you generate you 0.50 a month. That is that you have generated a responsive list and do not over do the product offers. As I got in to basically an argument the other day here with some one who says they offer a product with every single email. This is fine and dandy but you need to make sure that you are doing so the right way. For instance I do offer them a product almost every time they view on of my emails. However I do not sell them the product in the email I give them the free information they want and need. Then the pages I send them to to watch a video or take part in a survey or to read an article. I make a product recommendation after they have received their free information as contained in the email. This helps build trust with your readers. Not to mention they have absolutely no obligation to visit the page for the product I send them too. It is not until I decide on a product I am going to be offering that they need to take action as soon as possible. For the other products will be offered periodically through out the responder series with free information.

    I wouldn't wait another day. Here's what I'd do:

Promote the freebie on your front page to get more subscribers.
Add an upgrade page to your site (product salespage).
    Add an affiliate program.
Tell your existing subscribers you have: 1. Added the product to your site. 2. Added an affiliate program and invite them to join.
Upsell the product to new subscribers when they sign-up.
    Start advertising everywhere.

@Rondo good tips. I've already got the free product I give away on the website. Haven't got the affiliate program set up yet though, but trust me. That's in the works!

More than anywhere else, your list quality is far more important than your quantity.

A classic example with 100 raving fans buying almost anything compared to 1 million people who ignore you... what would you like?

Test yourself a process of giving away valuable information and add some paid content here and there, you may even start at low prices like $5 and see what happens...

I dont think the size of the list matters as much as:

    a) How did you got the list
    b) How much copy writing skills you have.

A list that you got from paid customers will response on a
double rate than other gotten by giving away freebies.

The copywriting skills are crucial here, because if you got
at list the basic that will help you to increase the response
    of your list

@patadeperro - True. I'd rather take a list of buyers for sure. But, for me that's not really an option right now since I'm starting out.

I'm going the give away something for free in return for an email address right now. The majority will always be "tire kickers" but I believe you'll always be able to find a few buyers in there as well.

NURTURE that list before selling your product.
Dont build a list and let your subscribers forget you.

Then i think this could be the Gold Standard.

10.000 leads may sounds too much but conside that when you have 500 or 1000 leads
you can do ad swaps and other strategies for list building.

And also USE THE PROFITS OF ITEM SOLD TO INCREASE YOUR LIST!

As an example use the money to do fb ads, google ads, etc.

So you can reach 10k subscribers.

Before selling your product try to sell affiliate's products, so you can see the reactions of your leads: as an example in your case something related to the tools in your niche.
