OMG. I have GOT to be the most technically ignorant person here.

I have all kinds of great ideas, but I have NO CLUE how to make them available to the internet world.

All I want is a simple site that I can sell an ebook (or other stuff) on, capture email addresses, and possibly put some video or audio on there. Installing scripts, java, yadda, yadda, yadda - I just don't get it.

I have NO IDEA how to do any of this... My sister can only help me so many times...

Can you direct me to a site that does this for a fair price - and what should I expect that fair price to be?

Thanks to you all!

You can hire someone at a freelancing site like Elance.com, but I honestly think you can do this yourself if you watch a few video tutorials or something.

    Hi, ErinJoi

First ... congratulations on the motivation to move forward.

Second ... I've been doing this Internet Marketing stuff for a lot of years and when it comes to stuff like installing scripts, I don't do it myself. I either have my business partner do it or I hire the software company itself to handle the installation.

I've got myself stuck more times than I care to admit by thinking, "Surely, I can figure out how to do this myself." And sometimes, I can. But when it comes right down to it ... WHY?!?!?

(Especially when I have to hire someone to undo what I screwed up... or when I waste hours of my time and then STILL have to pay someone else to do it.)

I make my money by coming up with ideas and getting those ideas sold. I rely on the services of others who can handle these technical issues.

As you progress, you'll begin to find a person (or people) that you can trust and rely on. It may take a few times and a few glitches along the way. Anyone who has experienced success has also experienced those glitches.

Jessica has given you some great advice: elance.com

There may also be some folks on this forum that can give you some specific referrals and advice. There is a lot of talent in here. As you review these posts, you may find just the help you're looking for.

    Hi there,

If you want to set a simple web site to sell your stuff you can try Mini Site Creator.

I used to have my web designer do all that stuff for me until I kept wanting to make changes to my site and would have to wait ages for it.

I decided to teach myself and used Jim Edwards Mini Site Creator, it's a little pricey but takes you through every step of the process from selecting hosting companies to the template you want to use to FTP'ng your site to make it live on the web to setting up an Aweber autoresponder to setting up payment buttons.

My first mini site took me 5 days, now I can flick them up on the web in less than a day and that includes squeeze page, thank you page, sales page and download page and email follow up sequence.

I would never have believed I would be able to do that, but you will.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Maybe you should pay your sister instead?

Good help like that is hard to find. Let her make some money too.

It sounds like your an ideas person. If you have the funds then why not outsource the making of the site (rope in your sister for a fee if necessary) and concentrate on the marketing side of things. It's hard to do everything well and it all takes time to learn. Go the shorter route and get there faster.

What a terrific idea. Thanks for telling us about that Mary

I am sure that I can challenge the OP for his claim to be the most least techie person. I am embarrassingly dim when it comes to anything online as this is all new to me.

      Thanks again Mary

Write down your goals. For each of them, set a time limit and try to accomplish that task before the expiration date. You may need to research further to see if anyone else is doing the same thing. Or you may want to discuss and expand your ideas in a discussion forum.

Usually you would buy a domain name, pay a web hosting company, upload your files to the web server, test to make sure everything looks right using different web browsers, maybe edit some HTML or PHP or CSS code yourself, then pay for advertising to promote your product or service.

But if you just want to sell ebooks, you can bypass most of these steps by signing up for Clickbank, finding a product you like in their marketplace, and simply pay for advertising to promote their product using your affiliate tracking link. That way you don't necessarily need a domain name or web server or pretty much anything else. Just promote any or all of the affiliate products you can find.

You don't have to do this yourself, you can outsource it to a company like getresponse.com or aweber.com. Once you sign up with them, just copy and paste their code to your webpage so new visitors can sign up. Be aware there might be a monthly cost to manage your list. Another idea is to simply collect this information yourself using a standard web form and your own mySQL database. But it will be up to you to weed out fake emails, abuse, and the security of the entire system.

This is an easy one. Just about any video you see these days has an embed code or share code. Take a look at YouTube.com or any of a hundred other sites, and just copy and paste their code into your webpage or blog posting. I know a lot of people do this for their pages on Myspace and other social networking sites.

You don't have to be a programmer. If you cannot find ready made scripts, just post a job description of what you want created in the WarriorForum. There is a section for classified ads, and another one for hire. Your other option is to open an account at elance.com or rentacoder.com or something similar. Interested people post bids for your project, they do the work, and you pay them.

Read and study. There are a lot of free resources out there, and I think someone already mentioned free video tutorials. Those are great because it shows you screenshots or where to move your mouse on the software application you are learning how to use.

Hope this helps a little bit. Good luck.

uhm....do it like i did. I had a VERY little HTML and scripting experience, but i staretd using XSitePro for building sites, you certainly might want to check this out.
You get a lot of experience since working with XSP is really easy, and it produces GREAT results. In addition, every minute you spend with making a site is also learning. The good thing about xsite pro is that it is very easy to make a site..but you can still tweak and look at the HTML source (if you want) and then you learn more about it.

    Dear Erin,

About the "fair price - and what should I expect that fair price to be?"...

This is a very tricky question BUT the nice part is that YOU have the answer!

I will explain you how's that:

Definitely you can make a market research and get the "best" offers, after and only after you will sit down and write the COMPLETE specifications about what you would like to have, aka request for development.

Having a broad description will never help you nor the other parties. If you will ask for the cheapest price for a limousine, by giving a broad description like "a big black car, with plenty of space be able to lay in it, to be used in special occasions and it is a must to look impressive" you may get a and ACCEPT the cheapest offer. The surprise is that you may get delivered a ... mortuary car instead, which actually is THE CHEAPEST product that respects the complete list of requirements...

Now, coming back to our ships, I was telling you that YOU and only YOU have the answer:

Please take a look to the attached picture.

You are given the options of Fast, Good and Cheap, and told to pick any two. Here Fast refers to the time required to deliver the website, Good is the quality of the final product (aka website), and Cheap refers to the total cost of designing and building the website. This triangle reflects the fact that the three properties of a project are interrelated, and it is not possible to optimise all three - one will always suffer. In other words you have three options:

    * Design something quickly and to a high standard, but then it will not be cheap.
    * Design something quickly and cheaply, but it will not be of high quality.
    * Design something with high quality and cheaply, but it will take a long time.

Now, it is your turn to decide on which path to go: do it by yourself, done it by your sister, outsourced, etc.

Whatever it will be, I wish you success!

You can join my site made-in.us.com. This could be a starting point for you to test the waters for cheap as it allows you to put up audio, video and pictures. If it works then it might allow you to grow into a site of your own

OMG. I have GOT to be the most technically ignorant person here.
Probably not by a long shot.

Take it one bit at a time. Decide which parts you want to learn and which you can reasonably pay someone else to do.

You know --- how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. You don't need java and audio and videos right away. Start w a product or even a give-away report and put up one page with an opt-in box to list-build. Then expand on that.

Most of all, beware the yellow brick road of 'helpers' trying to sell you something to solve your problem.

For every person standing on a corner saying 'I have 10K I don't know what to do with', there will be 100 with a 'solution'.
