Public Service Announcement: Read This If You're Worried About Google Instant Search

Ok, it's not a real PSA--but I wanted to touch on a few things real quick.

Back when I first started in IM and Google would make major changes like this I used to get worried and I'd panic, so this thread is more or less for others like me who get anxious and worried about this kind of stuff (I thankfully no longer do).

Google Instant...here's what this means for your business online:

Probably nothing. Honestly.

The odds of this becoming the default search for Google is highly unlikely, and the majority of people won't take to it too easily. That's part of the reason I think this is just a temporary change. That being said, even if this is the new Google standard, there's no cause for concern.

Why?

2 reasons: there are still SO many traffic sources online outside of Google and this is a great wake up call for marketers who focus solely on Google and even more so for those who focus on SEOing long tail keywords.

Simply put you should let this small change, even if temporary, be a small fire under your ass to help force you to make changes.

i.e. Start looking to other traffic sources like Facebook PPC, MSN, Bing organic (SEO) and even somewhat guerilla stuff like guest blogging/blog commenting on high traffic blogs.

If you're still in the SEO game with Google now is the time to target very short keywords, which is a GOOD thing. Afterall, the search volume is in the SHORT keyword phrases.

Most newbies optimize for "weight loss for old people" instead of just "weight loss." This is a great way to get ranked but is the traffic really there? Probably not. When you're forced to rank in the top 5 for "weight loss" you'll start to LOVE Google Instant results.

Anyway, this is just a bit of a rant/advice to others who might panic when they start to see Google do stupid things like this. There's always an alternative out there for traffic and earning online, no matter how big the "big G" gets.

P.S. Yeah I know this post is about 1-2 days late, but still wanted to throw this out there

The competition for short tail keywords will be stronger and stiffer since many more will start trying to rank for these short 1 or 2 keyword terms in my opinion.

That does not mean that long tail is dead. With Google, things tend to balance out. So while people panic, keep building the right ways.

Don't look now, but Google Instant just *might* actually be a GOOD thing for long-tail pursuers. I'm gonna leave it at that, otherwise my friends in the long-tail business will come over and slap me around. Just put your thinking caps on if you do go after the long-tail, and I bet you figure it out.
