Godaddy.com For Sale to the Highest Bidder!

GoDaddy Is on the Block - WSJ.com

"GoDaddy.com, the closely held website that registers Internet domain names, has put itself up for sale in an auction that could fetch more than $1 billion, people familiar with the matter said.

Qatalyst Partners, the boutique firm run by veteran technology banker Frank Quattrone, has been hired to shop the Go Daddy Group Inc., which runs the world's largest domain name registrar, these people said. Private-equity firms are expected to bid for the company, which currently has more than 43 million domains under management."

I wouldn't hold your breath - just because they may have new owners doesn't mean that any of this will change.

They already have a winning formula, even if we don't love it (I also concur with the frustration of using their interface and the annoyance of a dozen upsells on my 99 cent .info domain). We are not necessarily their target market. This is the only Domain Registrar that is known by the general public, and the annoying upsells probably do work well on the non-IM crowd.

The domains are sold for SUCH a low price that I doubt they make much profit. I think the stupid interface is how they try to milk EVERY attempt to register. The new buyers may be no better, if they keep the same prices.

Network solutions was, and technically IS, a MONOPOLY! There is only ONE place ON THE PLANET that can register a .com, or .net domain name for virtually NOTHING!!!! And that is Network Solutions(aka verisign). GODADDY, and ALL other such registrars, have to pay THEM to register the domain names.

Having said that, verisign has a history of buying up MAJOR players in an industry, or major competitors. They bought out Thawte(#2 in SSL certs, when verisign was #1), and they bought out Cybercash, and I believe payflow. Major players in credit card gateways.

SO, is VERISIGN the one that is looking to buy Godaddy? WHERE IS the antitrust legislation here?

This is the key .. it may annoy folks
but it still works. If it did not work
      they would not do it.

I'm always amazed at marketers that
put their personal feelings ahead of what
      works.

There is no "good" and no "bad" .. there's
only "works" and "does not work".

Up sell folks .. then up sell some more.

There is 1 up sell that everyone should be
doing and 99% do not... up sell your same
digital product into a physical product...

You know why? Because it works! And with
simple automation it takes ZERO effort.

I really can't understand all these complaints about GoDaddy Upsells.

In my opinion, these are THE ONLY SMART upsells I see on IM sites.

They are not annoying, they pop smoothly through your purchase without freaking scripts or stupid 1000 pt text...you are not forced to read 30 pages long sales pitch, and you always have a clear option to move on...

Really...I can't understand those who complain...Godaddy upsells represent the model that shall be followed in any upselling/cross-selling process.

And that is based on what exactly? The only thing to learn is how NOT to do business.

I've gotten my domains from Godaddy for the cheapest price anywhere using Godaddy coupon codes and other Godaddy specials. Their domain support has always been incredible. Everytime I've called it's been fast and polite and completely satisfactory resolution to any problem I've had.

Their interface ... upsells ... who cares? Anyone not know how to scroll to the bottom and hit continue without purchasing other things? I've had much more annoying upsells buying IM products with all those crappy popup optin boxes and 3 or more OTOs before you get to the download page.

Their hosting sucks and has always sucked.

LOL, He can't..He'll be taking those to the bahamas when GoDaddy sells

On a more serious note, though some of us may not like the way upsells are presented by GoDaddy, still there's no hiding the fact that almost all of us buy from them.

They have created a working system that is dependable. With their current set-up we can all go sound asleep at night without worrying about our domains or whether the system that is keeping it will break anytime. With their system, we can be comfortable with the fact that if we keep on paying our yearly registration fees our domains will be safe, at least that's my experience so far.

They may offer tons of upsells but have you heard them charging you something outside of what you actually agreed to purchase?

There was a horror story here once where they say the company was charging them even if they cancelled already.

That's not how it is with GoDaddy.

And who here doesn't get excited or at least curious about the coupons for .99 cents .com domains? Honestly, whenever I see a coupon for the .99 cents .com posted here I feel like a kid receiving candy from Santa even if I won't use the coupon.

Now, regarding the $1B price tag. I think for something like GoDaddy, that is low.

However, we don't see their financial reports. We don't know their retained earnings, total assets/total liabilities and net income per month/per year so we won't really know if they should fetch that much.

But if I have $1B somewhere just gaining interest..Then I would most probably use it and bid.

      All the best,

There is none. There were (unsolicited, undisclosed) offers (as there have been in the past) but this is to be expected when your company is poised for continued growth, year after year.

Current domains under management is creeping close to 50% of ALL marketshare TLD's, with ever-aggressive marketing sure to push this over the top. Being a private company, Bob is sitting on a profit-monster. I sure as helL wouldn't sell

See, I'm not the only paranoid one that thinks GoDaddy does this!

Anyway, I don't have a problem with all their upsells, except the fact that most of my brick and mortar business clients are usually all signed up with GoDaddy hosting which is just horrible, but their upsells work and work very well.

I have had horrible experiences before with other registrars over the years but not with GoDaddy so I'm not moving until I absolutely have to!

Maybe when one searches using their interface, see it's available, don't take
it on the spot for whatever reason, then find it's registered when they finally
get around to it. It's been discussed here and elsewhere many times.

Unfortunately it's easier to believe that rather than consider few possibilites.
Not that that's stopping Go Daddy from making money and growing, though.

I think that Bob Parsons has done a tremendous job of promoting and building up the Godaddy brand. Perhaps he just wants to retire now, lol.

Though we may snicker and deride Godaddy for its numerous upsells and flashy but complicated user interface, there is absolutely no doubt about its profitability. Its slightly risque ads and sexy girls have made it stick out in the dreary world of domain name registrars, and they should be awarded a gold medal for this little branding exercise of theirs. There is no doubt their crazy series of upsells has multiplied profitability like crazy, and this is what allows them to crush the other registrars when it comes to offering insane, unbeatable deals - what other registrar gives you so many opportunities each year to buy .com domains at 99 cents each?

After reading all the good, the bad and the ugly on this thread ... i'd like to offer my 3cents worth ...

back in 2006 - i contacted Bob on his radio show and asked him a few questions. His team contacted me and due to time zone differences i was not able to speak to bob live on the air, however he did take the time to answer my questions on the air.

So for all those who say their service is bad ... I would like to ask for examples please ...

I bet you now that after all the dust settles you will find that most of the time its actually the user who caused the "issue" and that we love to blame everyone else for our "issues" ...

I have over 200 domains on godaddy.com - i have not once in my almost 10 years of dealing with Godaddy had one problem. no domains have been stolen from me, i host my domains with them and point to various hosting providers in the us and uk ...

As for the upselling that some of you dont like ... any IM'er with any business sense will understand that upselling is a vital part of revenue generating .. its like you are kicking your own business model in the mouth on a forum that is all about creating revenues on the internet ...

As for Bob and his sale of Godaddy.com - if he get $1bill of it then that is wonderful - He started the company with his own money and has built it up to be 400 million strong in domain administration ....

Do yourselves a favour and study his model ... not one of you on this thread can place your businesses up for anything close to $1bill ... if im wrong about that then please create a WSO for us to buy and i'd love to spend my hard earn cash learning all of your knowledge ...

Have had many domains through Godaddy for years and never had any problems. Who cares about the upsells? Don't most marketers here offer upsells until you just want to throw up?

As for the stealing domains conspiracy ... if you have not paid for the domain, it's not yours. Searching for domains do not make the domain yours. Paying for the domain makes it yours. Until payment is made, it's anyone's domain.

Maybe Hostgator should acquire the company?

Then again, they are already the best at what they do - it shouldn't take long for most people to realize this and move their accounts over. Then Godaddy.com will just be a $10 domain name which you can purchase on Hostgator. Not just that, but Hostgator would've saved themselves $1billion.

Love the Godaddy but the problem with the upsell is that these may be mistakenly bought!

I have had numberous occasions where at the ckeck-out there are a couple of additional charges that I did not intend to purchase!

Might be because you have click "add" on the upsell sections during the checkout process

Thomas, Godaddy has excellent customer service. I have friends who had accidentally purchased upsells during the check-out process too, but all you really need to do is call Godaddy up and explain your situation - I asked them to do just that, and Godaddy refunded the stuff they accidentally purchased right on the spot!
