I'm sure many of you have already known this but many probably also have no clue.

I personally didn't found this until someone pointed it out to my today. As you probably already know if you want to edit graphics you'd probably look for adobe photshop. Issue is unless you get it illicit way it can be quite costly.

Thus this means many of you cannot edit your headers, create headers, edit graphics to pimp up your site. And we also know google cares about images. You can get good traffic from google images.

The solution? Gimp:
GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program

It's a free software that is easy to use and can be use to create headers.

Off topic If you want to resize any images there is also another tool online that allows you to upload the file, and choose plenty of settings and then the new type of file you want.

It can be quite useful and helpful especially when I need jpg from psd or need psd from jpg but I don't have adobe.

Great thing is this is online tool so you don't need to install or download anything just input it and then search it.

I forgot the link for it but I'm sure you can easily find it if you need it jsut want you to know it's out there.

I know this is no new news to many of you but just for those less techies like me who didn't know about it.

Hello, I've been trying to figure out how to modify some graphic headers I downloaded so I can actually put my own text where it says "Your text here" but I can't seem to figure it out. I downloaded GIMP to give it a shot, but there doesn't seem to be a separate text layer in the image so I have no idea how it should be done, it doesn't seem possible. I hope it is because then all those headers I downloaded are worthless haha. Any ideas? Thanks!

What is the file extension of the file you are trying to edit? It should be .psd.

It sounds like it might be a .jpg, .png or .gif.

If its a psd then it should have layers unless it got 'flattened' and then is indeed useless for editing.

Ah, thanks Peter, much appreciated. Have you ever had a problem with some headers or any graphics not appearing correctly in GIMP, just showing up all white? I'm finding that the headers and footers I open up from the graphics package I downloaded from this forum are doing that, but the buttons seem to be fine...

I think this may be due to some of the header/footer grahics relying on photoshop layer styles which gimp doesn't support and also some of the blend modes (in the layers tab) being different.

I used to find the same problem in older versions of Fireworks.

I'd create a graphic in PS and if I opened it up in Fireworks it would be all messed up.

The later versions of Fireworks support PS layer styles so this doesn't happen now!

Tried it. Hated it. Went back to Photoshop, even though it meant paying for an upgrade to work on my new Windows 7 computer.

Sometimes you just have to spend the $$ and save yourself the time and aggravation of trying to work with a free product.

One other alternative to GIMP is a free program called Inkscape.

Inkscape will allow you to design, modify, and work with vector graphics unlike GIMP. If you use both these programs, and there are enough YouTube tutorials to get you up to speed very rapidly, you can at least handle the easy chores relating to graphics on your website.

Now, obviously you will need a marginal dose of talent when using these programs, but the bottom line is with a little practice you can accomplish a lot.

Especially if you are longer with time than you are with money.
