Google Instant = Lost Sales

IMO the new Google Instant will translate into lost sales for all the small guys!

After experimenting with it for awhile I found that no matter what I type in I was given whatever results Google saw fit to display. For example:

I type in the letter "H" and the first listing is MSN Hotmail. Now my question is this. Why Hotmail and not the first website that has an "A" after the "H"? This happens for every query. It seems unfair that only the largest of the large will get primary placement.

Also you can forget about long tail phrases!! I get distracted after the first two keystrokes!!

What are your thoughts?

I personally found it so freaking annoying, like being on a carousel, that I went into settings and turned it off.

I don't know what the rest of the world will do.

But there was a long thread on this yesterday.

"look ahead" searching is still based on rank, its not an alphabetical / sequential search method. So if you type in "F" you get Facebook, but if you type in "M" you get Myspace. Both heavy hitters in the page rank arena, but Google's results have nothing to do with where they fall alphabetically.

If I'm searching for "horny school girls", who cares if hotmail pops up when I hit the "h"? That's not what I'm looking for, so I'm going to pay zero attention to it.

    Negative attitude=Lost Sales.

I actually think there's a huge opportunity to exploit google instant. Think about it.

Now people are seeing results by typing in only part of what they were originally intending to type. Now you can target keywords with very little competition because no one anticipated that people would only put a smaller portion of their intended search.

Think about it: Say someone is trying to type in "Tips and tricks for using google instant" You might be able to target "tips and tricks for using G(with a space) oogle"

I haven't really fleshed out this idea and it may not work specifically like that but i'm positive there has got to be a huge opportunity in this google instant thing.

Google mantra from now till the next few years will be "Mobile First".

Google Instant makes sense on mobile and I believe they are experimenting how it will pan out on desktop too.

It is just a way to get to what you want faster.

If you are THINKING of typing "Lost tv series boxset discount" and found a result to what you want just after typing "Lost tv series box", it will THEORETICALLY be a good user experience.

Anyway, a well SEO'ed page will still have a good ranking for both set of phrases.

Nothing changes. Short tail will remain competitive, and long tail is where you will find the opportunity.
