What determines this?...

When filling in one's email address (like in an optin box), sometimes a dropdown box appears with my email address already in it (somehow my browser must generate that (FF)), and sometimes no dropdown box (thus forcing me to type the whole thing in from scratch).

What determines whether the box appears or not?

Is it something that the code for the OPTIN box determines? If so, wouldn't it be much better to equip one's optin boxes with this capability? (because it makes it that much EASIER for the person signing up to sign up!).

Just curious.

Thanks.

    TW,

What you are referring to is called the "autofill" feature.

As far as your question regarding "what" determines the autofill feature? It's your browser.

I think the problem specific to you is with your Firefox Autofill feature. It can be buggy at times. The workaround would be to find a more robust autofill program or firefox extension.

The mother of all is Roboform and can be found here:

RoboForm: Password Manager, Form Filler, Password Management

Also, there are firefox extensions that do this as well. Here's a link to a bunch of them on the firefox website:

    Good Luck!

    Thanks.

I was really just wondering about it from a marketer's point of view. If it was something that could be built in from the marketer's 'side of the counter,' then it would be advantageous to put that feature into one's optin box.

But since it's a function of the individual browser, it's out of the control of the marketer. Oh well.

The autofill feature works by storing values by a control's name. Thus, if you want to make sure that the autofill list shows up on your forms, on your customer side, make sure that you are using the most common names for your controls.
