Wordpress question? Regarding Affiliate links

I think I heard that WP does not allow affiliate links. Was I dreaming.
I want to set up a review site for a Clickbank product and have learned a whole bunch lately about WP and am getting pretty good.
So what is the exact deal as far as WP and affiliate links,

    The free blogs at Wordpress.com don't allow affiliate links.

    If you are hosting Wordpress on your own domain name, then there isn't a problem.

    Hi Cathy

    There are two versions of WordPress:

    1 - The hosted version at wordpress.com. This is a service like Blogger and is intended for personal accounts, not commercial ones. You don't want to setup your site here, once they discover its commercial nature they will take it down.

    2 - The version of WordPress that you download from wordpress.org and install on your own hosting account. You may use this for any purpose you want, including housing affiliate links.

    Hope this clarifies the matter.

    Okay now i get it.... Yes I read yesterday for the first time that there was a difference between WP.com and WP.org

    So to clarify if i Use a free theme but I host it on my own cpanel host i can put in affiliate links.

    It all makes sense now. Cool yippee I am gald I learned about self hosted WP first.

      Yep. Most WordPress themes are released under a GPL license which means you are free to do what you want with them. That certainly includes adding affiliate links wherever you want.

      Like several folks said above, with the free hosting service at WordPress.com it's a totally different deal. On WP.com affiliate links are a no-no.

    I asked wordpress this question and they told me you can have affiliate links in but, not to many and it can not be the main focus of your blog, ie cant make blog just for affiliate links, spose you could stick a couple in every 20 posts! i have deleted responce i had off them else i would of shown you

      Same as Blogger really.

      If you want to start a blog (bear in mind that WordPress was originally released as a blogging platform) then it is an economical way of doing it without the need of acquiring hosting and a domain name.

      It was never intended for Internet Marketers.

    It's best you set up a wordpress blog on your own domain and hosting.

    blogger/wordpress blogs (that are not owned by you) can get shut down anytime for any reason...

    I agree. Always host your own installation. Just make sure you backup!

    You have full control when you host it yourself and you certainly own the content.

    Best to have your own domain. But I had a look at the TOS and couldn't find a specific mention related to affiliate links.

    • the Content is not spam, is not machine- or randomly-generated, and does not contain unethical or unwanted commercial content designed to drive traffic to third party sites or boost the search engine rankings of third party sites, or to further unlawful acts (such as phishing) or mislead recipients as to the source of the material (such as spoofing);
    Since I don't think it's spam...

    In addition to AdSense-type ads, please do not use the following services on your blog: sponsored / paid posts including PayPerPost, ReviewMe, and Smorty; affiliate / referral links to the following domains: usercash, clickbank, clickhop, cashrocks, payingcash; clicktrackers (and any similar) and any promotion of the "I made a million on the internet and so can you" type of advertising (i.e. MLM, network marketing, cash gifting, etc.). Paid or sponsored post content is also prohibited.
