I am confused about Google Keyword Tool

1) I would like to confirm if all the keyword results on Google Keyword Tool are keywords people are paying for to appear on Google?

2) I don't seem to see any difference among the Broad, Exact and Phrase Match when selecting anyone of them. Seems to me that the only thing that matters is whether the "All Keyword Ideas" or "Ideas Containing My Search Terms" is checked which will yield different results

3) What happens when I select more than one Match Type at the same time?

    1) No, it is based on all the searches done withing Google. It is not related to Adwords paid keywords. It brings back the search terms as you type them into the search box.

    2) There should be a difference if it is a 2 or more word search phrase. Something like "marketing" will bring back the same values but something like "Internet Marketing Guru Launch" will bring back different values for broad, phrase and exact matches

    3) If you check all three it will bring the results back in the following format:
    Internet Marketing Guru 123456789 (broad match)
    "Internet Marketing Guru" 56789 (phrase match)
    [Internet Marketing Guru] 789 (exact match)

    I can recommend the Market Samurai training as well

      In that case, why do many refer that the Google Keyword Tool is actually for advertisers using Adwords? What would make that not suitable as keyword research for websites?

      2) Hi, i tried much longer terms but the only difference when i select different match types is exact match results are bracketed, phrase match results are " " and all the results are in the same order?? :confused: I assume the default advanced options will be "All Keyword Ideas"

      3) Sorry, but I dont exactly understand what you mean

        The Keyword Tool is meant for Advertisers primarily but is gives you the results of all the searches that is done on Google. It is their way of telling you what the search volumes are in the hope that you will buy Adwords for some of those keywords. Just an additional point on that, the numbers are not exact. In actual fact, you should use it as an indicator only. I look at the order of magnitude of the numbers rather than at the exact number. And sorry to say but I believe their traffic numbers are slightly overstated.

        I was trying to show the difference in traffic numbers that you can expect with the various match types. It was just artitratry figures to show how much they can differ. Exact match is always a lot less for longtail key phrases

        I really suggest that you look at the Market Samurai training videos. It explains the nuances of market research very well

    I sorted out my search according to "Global monthly Search" instead of relevance and I finally got different results. What puzzles me is why when selecting exact match, there is more than 1 result, shouldn't exact match means the result is EXACTLY THE SAME as what we types in?

    Am I right to say that the "ideas containing my search terms" has the same function as Phrase match?

    How does typing in several keyword terms in affect the results instead of searching them up one by one?

    I apologise for my many amateurish questions!

      Hi Alexa,

      don't worry about the questions, asking is the only way to get answers. I think you could do with figuring out the difference between broad, phrase and exact match then you'll understand this much better. I think what you mean by more than one result for exact match is this, thats how many times people have searched for the exact phrase. Let me try and explain this, broad match as I know it goes like this, I type in...

      Hairy elephant

      in broad match you will get results returned that contain any phrase with those 2 words in, for example..

      where can I see an elephant thats hairy...

      If you typed in phrase match...

      "hairy elephant"

      It'll return all results with that term in that order but can and will include other words for eg..

      my hairy elephant is here...

      With exact match...

      [hairy elephant]

      Someone has only searched for the term exactly as it is for eg,

      hairy elephant.

      Market samurai has free video's that explain this and is in my opinion the best tool for keyword research. You can search for results by broad, phrased or exact match and see what results you'd get from paid traffic as well as organic

      I hope this helps it's not so easy to explain.

    Hi - Great thread for us newbies; So am I right in thinking that for a Google exact match search, there are no guideline numbers that you can use to decide whether or not a niche is worth pursuing? I was hoping someone would tell me it was 5 keywords each with a google exact match volume of 2000 per keyword, or something like that?
