affiliate site - long term vs. hit-n-run?

Whenever I read a tutorial or watch a video on how to do a successful affiliate site they all seem to follow the same road map:

1. find a niche
2. research keywords
3. buy a domain composed of the keywords (eg. buyautoinsurance.com)
4. Create a landing page rich in those keywords and monetized with adsense and affiliate links.
5. Cash checks

Is that the way most people do it? I have also read that this way can only be successful in the short term or until interest in the niche dies out. Then you have to move on to another niche.
It seems like it would be more profitable in the long run to have a site that concerns a more general topic and add lots of content to it that addresses many, more specific sub-niches of that topic.

So what's the consensus?
#affiliate #hitnrun #long #site #term
  • that method can be short and long term you just need to add a step that is very important.

missed step: do everything you can to get the visitors email address, then you can keep marketing to them for a long time.

however, that is the short term way for seo that you mention, and that's only one small way to make money, there are many other ways to get traffic like videos, facebook, viral apps, ppc, etc, that don't involve your steps above.

I guess my main question was not "what are all the ways to get traffic" but the relative merits of a very narrow niche site vs. a more general content-rich site.

I would consider the 'hit-and-run' method as the litmus test.

If you build a targeted niche site, and it starts getting traffic and earning, bbuild it out, thus turning your short term hit and run into a long term income earner.

It's not as simple as that. SEO ranking a mini niche site for any keyword worth a damn is not easy and certainly not fast. There's plenty of more things to do if you want your site to rank high.

I think it is quite good to start one page and see how it works.
Does it well? Let it grow.
No traffic and sales? Go for another niche.
