So I'm not going to name names here.. But a subscriber of mine replied to my newsletter with this today (and apparently, opted out as well).

You REALLY need to have someone edit your English before sending it out!! MOST readers will not take you seriously with such poor English usage. You may think readers may ignore horrible English because you are only 15 (if that's how old you really are), but MOST people will only laugh at your writing. (Do yourself a favor --- NEVER, EVER use a semi-colon again! It is extremely rare they are ever used -- and you ALWAYS use them improperly.)

Here's another FREE edit -- I would normally charge for:

Welcome to Edition Number 3 of the Newsletter. Today I've got some great ideas for you, so please.... make sure you read this entire newsletter. As usual, I like to pack a lot of valuable material you can use into one package.

First, we'll be going through some of the tips from my new course, List Cash Machine. Then we'll talk about a hosting company that I highly recommend. I'll also give you an update on what's up with my school work "interfering" with my internet business. I appreciate that many of you replied to my message to check-up on me.

Here's this weeks newsletter...
I'm not really sure what to say to this person.. I try my hardest to deliver quality.

Thoughts?

Don't let it worry you! Thank him/her for being so eagle eyed and move on.

Have a snigger though about your subscribers incorrect use of capitalisation and why on earth would they want to close a paragraph in paranthesis LOL

        Caleb,
Don't let this bug you, and since they already opted out, just tell
them you are sorry to see them go as you really appreciate people watching what you write and you are going to miss their feedback.

Without seeing the full text of your newsletters too, it's
hard to get both sides of the story.

Take a step back and ask yourself if the subscriber has
valid comments and whether the feedback is useful for
      you.

At least the subscriber read your e-mail and took the
time to give you feedback. Do they make valid points
or are they being too fussy?

If their feedback is valid, then celebrate because you
can be sure other subscribers are thinking the same
      but haven't told you so.

In my newsletters, I try to write in a friendly one-on-one
conversational style and don't pay much attention to
      strict grammar rules.

I do however spell check the whole e-mail and also
read through it a couple of times to make sure it
      reads well.

In this case, just make a decision as to whether the
subscriber has made some valid or invalid comments
      and act accordingly.

      Dedicated to your success,

I'd go into my AR account and remove them from the list. It's just one person, and they sound pretty soured on you for this pretty silly reason. They're clearly useless to you in terms of being a future customer, even though what he/she said may well apply (if your emails are rife with errors, as he/she suggested). Use that advice to better things, if it was constructive criticism. But don't get hung up on the comments or get into a pissing match with them. It will serve no useful purpose.

Are you sure about the friend part? The language doesn't sound
like that of a friend to me. I think the subscriber went over-board
to tell you to be careful to edit your emails before sending them
      out.

You'd always get those who are pharisaical when it comes to
grammar. But I think your grammar should explain your age
rather than cause the person to doubt it. (I'm thinking that
they are accusing you of being older than you claim.)

Anyway, in this business you'll get a few of those. I had a
$10K copywriting client who was "appalled" at the fact that
I misspelled "business". He was sooo rude about it that I
      refunded his money.

        Definitely.

And remember that some people opt-out of your list
because they may be subscribed with two different

Wow Caleb that is a bit harsh your English has always been exemplary as far as I am concerned. I am actually quite worried now that there are people out there like that; very pedantic in my humble opinion.

PS I am sure my semi colon is completely wrong.

NEVER, EVER use a semi-colon again!
        Caleb,

I suggest people not "shout" in emails.

Additionally, semi-colons are a very useful punctuation mark. Without them the legal professions would go out of business. (Hmm, on second thought...)

Back to cases, sometimes you don't desire to stop a sentence and a comma just isn't enough a pause.

It also appears your former subscriber doesn't think you should ever write code.

So, Caleb, by all means; continue to use semi-colons. Judiciously, of course...

That will change before long. I'll be 40 in a couple of days ... not so exciting

I wouldn't worry about this kind of stuff. You'll get all kinds, and it really isn't worth the hassle of trying to make them happy.

If you're really worried about it though, do a split test on one of your emails and see how it works out. Write the email yourself like you normally would and that's test A.

Have someone edit it for you, someone who should know how to fix it up - an English teacher for example. That's test B.

Send each out to half your list and see which one gets a better response and more unsubs. If the edited version either makes you more money or generates less unsubs, maybe it's worth testing a couple more times to see if the results hold up. If your version wins, move on.

Depending on what you are selling, 'proper' english' is or is not important. For example, unless you are quoting someone in a story or telling something as another person, using a contraction is considered a huge no-no. Notice they DO use a contraction in their re-write!

So whose rules are they following? I can probably find 12 English professors with 12 different sets of rules. This person obviously has a set of rules that is far from complete.

I really think being you is more important than following rules of English in a newsletter. As long as your 'mistakes' are not blatant. Some will always be annoyed by whatever their pet peeve is with English and ignore the mistakes that do not annoy them. Using 100% proper English is likely to annoy more than writing as yourself, IMHO. Meanwhile, there will always be: Anal people with different ideas on how you should be writing. (I had to mis-use the colon & end the paragraph with parentheses and an acronym. Lol).

You cannot please everyone you want... but if you try sometimes... you please who you need.

    Hi Caleb,

You have to realize that as your list grows larger, the personalities of your list can range across the board...crazy & deluded, hostile & aggressive, opinionated, helpful, friendly, ect...

I had an unsubscribe from someone who told me that I send out stuff too often. The particular list gets 2-5 emails a month. Go figure.

I used to take unsubscribes personal. These days, not so much. In a lot of ways, a list is lot like being an owner of any business. Some of the folks you do business with will be absolutely awesome and people that you would probably kick it with in real life. Others will be...well, they will present to you the true definition of what a pain in the ass is.

What I have learned is that you aren't going to make everyone happy all the time. Your best bet is to sort out the folks who really get your message and seem to understand your style and let the others make the decision to continue to hang or leave.

If you look at this situation with a positive attitude, you can treat it as a valuable feedback by your subscribers. It will be almost impossible to satisfy every single subscriber in your list.

As long you have put in your best effort to provide them with good values, you should be happy that you have done your best.

It will be better to focus your time on those subscribers who are willing to listen to your message. Just keep going

Some people are so insecure that they feel they have to point out other peoples flaws, and in some way it makes them feel superior.

These people are easy as pie to manipulate, because they are ego driven. You just let them feel superior, and convince them that it was THEIR idea in the first place to do exactly what you want. Then you thank them for being so freaking brilliant and helpful, and patriotic, and beautiful.

They get their jollies, you get to be the good guy (in a backhanded, sneaky sort of way) and they wind up having a much better day, because they "Won". But we know who the real winner is, don't we?

Here's a sample of what I (being a 40 year old, mother, not a 15 year old genius) would write back to the person.

"Thank you for taking the time to correct me. My english is improving, I'm told, but I know I can do better. It would be great for me if you could continue to point out these errors in my newsletter, so that I can become as good a writer as you are, and my other subscribers would appreciate the improvement in my writing as I learn from you as well."

Now, your subscriber has a job, feels useful, thinks they're helping, and will go over your newsletter with a fine toothed comb.

Downside=you still have this subscriber, and they are still correcting all your newsletters for you, after the fact, adding no value whatsoever to you except that your writing style will be just like theirs, if you listen.

Then, I'd put on my big girl panties, and at least scan the 'correction" emails, if they sent them.

Not saying that's what you should do, but if you can find a way to make it win-win, that's always the best outcome. Every customer service issue is an opportunity to build loyalty.

      Keep up the good work.

        Caleb,

As usual, the wombat has displayed their ignorance by including a number of errors which, while acceptable in normal conversation, should not be present in a diatribe correcting someone else's writing. For example, your English doesn't need editing. Your grammar and syntax might.

And, of course, there are a couple of logical fallacies mixed in with the grammatical misdemeanors.

I recommend reading the Wombat Report for a view into the minds of these harmless, if somewhat annoying, critters.

Writing in a way such that errors don't distract the reader is an important skill. It really is. That said, you need to continue to write and build your business while you learn. Do not let these folks slow you down or mess with your head.

Don't let the wombats get you down.

Read all the feedback you get from subscribers, including any they send you when they leave your list. Consider whether the criticisms might have merit, but don't take them personally. People often make things bigger than they are in order to make themselves feel justified in a decision.

You should only rarely reply to notes when someone unsubscribes. Try never to reply with flames, unless someone really steps over the line into viciousness or extreme stupidity. You probably shouldn't then, but the temptation is sometimes too much to resist.

    Hi Caleb

    First - learn from it!

It may sound harsh, but perhaps the guy has done you a favour. It is your chance to brush-up on semi-colon usage and transform yourself into a better writer. If you want to rely to him, simply thank him and let him know you appreciate his feedback.

Other than that, plough on - you're doing fine.

Hey Man... to me it looks like he doesn't respect you because of your age - since he brought it up in the email... and he is trying to "teach you" like people do with youngsters... If it were me, I would just delete him from my list and move on. I have tons of gramatical errors in the emails and stuff that I write - but who cares - Im not an english teacher - the CONTENT is what they are on your list for - if that is awesome nobody will care. Also, unless you are selling high end products, I would not recommend getting into long email conversations with your customers. I have found that if you are too accessible then they lose respect for you. Not to mention the time suck.

You dont want to ignore them, just get a VA to handle MOST of the email communications you receive.

There are nice ways of helping you out and then there is this person. He was just nasty so ignore and move on.

I've had subscribers help me out when I messed something up but they were nice about it.

I had one subscriber berate me because the hyperlink I sent for a resource (not even an affiliate link) didn't work for him (not sure why I always check) then I got an email from another subscriber thanking me and his link worked. So people always get bent out of shape over nothing.

The bigger the list the more likely the chances that you'll see unsubscribes with each mailing so don't worry about that.

Caleb you're 15 and happy birthday for when you're 16 in a month. Most people would bite your arm off to be in your position at your age.

Anyway, this has all be said but check this out, I do the challenge (the old 30DC) every year just to see what Ed Dales up to, only a few weeks back, and he admits he is the worst for typos, he sent out a message to everyone on the challenge saying we were all rocks for what we we're doing. Trouble is he forgot to put the R on rocks and put a C instead. So he basically told his entire list, which I'd say was pretty dam big, that they we're all C***s. If he can make the odd typo, hell chap, so can you.

I misspelled mother lode in an article once... People sent me email messages just to tell me what I already knew... "Lode" is spelled lode, not load...

Some implied that they could never trust me as a writer, because I did not edit my own stuff well... (Two additional editors after I wrote the article overlooked the misspelling too...)

I ended my paragraph above with a parenthesis... I know it is wrong, but I did it anyway... LOL

I responded to some of those folks that it was okay that they would never use me as their writer, because I could never trust them as a customer... People make mistakes, and if you are going to hold a simple mistake over the content of an article, then they are not my kind of customer either...

Then I said, "Besides that... You say that you would never trust me as your writer, but you were never really gonna hire me anyways... Were You?" Misspelled words intended... ROFLMAO

Market Leaders always attract trolls. Sit down, go through your stuff to see if he's right or not, but don't communicate with him and let it pass.

        Caleb,

Do not worry about it even a little bit. The likely demographic of people you'll be helping would be younger males of a similar age to yourself. They probabloy speak and write just like you so they will connect with your language.

You're not in an english class anymore and you want to write how you speak. This is how Frank Kern and Eben Pagan would tell you to write and I think they know a thing or two about marketing and connecting with your target market.

Remove them from your autoresponder list, thank them for "sharing" and move on knowing that you're doing your best to serve your target demographic.

Don't try to be everything for everyone. See if you can find out some information about your list - who, how old, etc? Then you can tailor your communications.

If you've got a big enough list, might be time to use Survey Monkey to find out who they are and how you can serve them.
