Yesterday morning I was excited to see that my site was no. 2 on the first page on my Ubuntu machine. Excited, I told my fiance who was on a windows machine and she looked to see that this wasn't the case and I was still on page 3. Is there google differences between linux and windows?

Here's the reason.. It has nothing to do with your OS. Google ranks you sometimes compared on the amount of times you VISITED the site already. So on your computer, it will rank higher, because you clicked on it, on google so many times.

    That's what I've heard.

    Benjammin,

Google could not care LESS that you happen to be on Linux! If she entered the request EXACTLY the same from the same URL, she SHOULD probably have gotten the same list, but I xan say it was NOT because of the OS.

you need to turn off history and tracking in google or you will get different ranking shown on your computer than what others get.

Also if you have google toolbar installed you can verify if history is on or off from the options.

This is also a privacy issue because with it on google tracks your searches and what links you click through, which sites you visit through google. If you have google toolbar installed then google tracks ALL sites and pages you go to and will show ads tailored to you. aka adsense.

But the thing is with the tracking and history turned on, which google has it on by default, You have to manually go to the advanced settings in google and turn it off. Your sites and those of others will be displayed in a different hierarchy than if it were off. Now that google instant is live, it effects that too I believe.

Google I think wants to show you sites and listings catored more to your likes dislikes but I am doubtful the accuracy of that.

BTW I wish I could remember how it is set in IE, but there ARE locale settings. There may ALSO be similar settings in the google user account. It is possible that HER settings allow 1 of the three sites that YOURS does NOT! en, for example, should allow all english sites, but en-us only allows english sites from the us. The folllowing gives an idea about what I am talking about:

What Are Locales and How Do I Use Them?

Anyway, there are a number of possibilities. AND was the link a SPONSORED link?
