There is a website created specifically for the local U.S. market, thus being a dot com. Eventually, it will branch out and include international markets and will need to be viewed in their respective languages.

For SEO, is it better to keep adding those international pages within your website or would you create brand new websites that look similar to the original but have the respective extensions (dot uk or dot ca, etc.)?

I keep thinking, with the latter suggestion, that G will look at all of the different domains, see the same content, and think they are duplicate content, then burying all the sites in the SERPs. What do you pros think??

If it is in a different language - it is NOT the same content. Not even G. is that dumb...

    I agree with Istvan.

And will add that even if they were in the same language, that still wouldn't be duplicate content, anyway: it would be syndicated content, for which no site has ever been "buried in the SERPs", nor will be, according to Google.

Okay, that makes better sense now. Thank you. I just wanted to make sure before making any mistakes.

I found a useful article here in case anyone's interested. wpml.org/2009/04/domain-per-language-subdomains-or-language-folders/

From the article: "The rest of us, who run translated contents, should stick to language folders or language sub domains."

So I think that makes my decision - to make either language folders or sub domains. Thanks for everyone's input.

Istvan IS saying something I have said for a LONG while! EVEN if the language were the SAME, the laws, customs, points of reference, etc.... are DIFFERENT! The US, Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, India would ALL be a little different. Anecdotes, USPs, etc.... may ALL be different. Simply translate a site, and the other cultures may have to google things, etc...

Ever see "other end of the line"? The Other End of the Line (2008) BOTH people are speaking english well, but one wants to look AMERICAN! Every time the other says something she ends up googling, etc... Granted that is OBVIOUS, but on websites it can be pretty subtle.

And we haven't even gotten to LANGUAGE! GOOD LUCK using a translation program. Just try translating english to another language, and translation it back. Talk about something getting lost in the translation!

    And what of pictures?

Agreed with Istvan here... not sure how you took from the original post that this person was asking for translation services. She's asking about sites in different languages, but NOT soliciting a service provider.

You may want to be careful how you offer your services in the forum... many won't take kindly to what seems like a blatant ad in a discussion forum.

Post a WSO or a Classified ad to sell your wares please.

I have to confess I immediately reported her post(s) after I told her she was a spammer

Most of the time it's not worth replying to spam - just report it: click on the little triangle with the ! in the middle...
