Just discovered the Thanks button

... I must say, I love the "thanks" button! I don't know why I didn't notice it before. There are so many helpful people on this forum that it is a nice, simple way to show that you appreciate the time they took to reply. Brilliant.

I love the button It's also a good way to see who is getting thanks for great posts and also who is giving them out to others who deserve it. I love that Allen put the numbers under our avatars.

I can see this thread becoming very popular. Purely out of it's originality.

      I like originality. Thanks

Be judicious with them though. You have a limited supply (around 6 I think) then you have to wait* to reload.

Don't know quite how it works but if you go around thanking everyone at will, you'll very soon find yourself empty of thanks.

        Peter

*Haven't yet figured out the wait time for a reload. Maybe Allen might chip in.

20 a day Max...it was 5, then 10, then I saw that people weren't abusing it so increased to 20.

It would be a bad thing to be empty of thanks. I like the way you put that. It's good there's a limit - I wasn't aware of it. But the limit will help us really mean it instead of passing them out too freely.

Aw, thanks! I'm also glad that this thread helped point out that the button exists ... it's a positive thing. I noticed it when I saw the stats in the side bar and felt happy that people thanked me for a few things - I wasn't aware. It's such a simple thing, but a nice community builder.

I think a "thanks limit" is a good thing, otherwise everyone will have thanks and no one will stand out with their thanks!

    Thanks Allen.

It didn't even occur to me that there might be a limit to how many times you could use the thanks button.

It feels really good to know that someone appreciates something you said but if there's a limit to the "thanks" then getting one is even more valuable.

I only noticed it recently myself. I think it's a great touch! I noticed that it says "Thanked X Times in Y Posts" is there a way to see *where* we were thanked (i.e. in what thread)?

    Thanks Allen!

I have to ask, it might seem dumb, what would happen if you thanked to many people?

You just run out till the next day. If someone gets carried away thanking people for no good reason we move them to a usergroup that doesn't allow them to use the thanks button.

I think the king of getting thanks is Big Mike for the MT thread. Nobody's gonna be able to touch him.

Anyone else feel stupid like me trying to find it after reading the thread? I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it took me over a minute to find it. Oh well, now I know.

Don't feel stupid! It took me a while after the feature was implemented to know it existed. I even saw people giving thanks to people and never made the connection. Then, it took me a while to find the button (which, if that happens to any of you, is on the bottom right corner of the posts).

And someone mentioned thanks to Big Mike for the MT thread - I agree, that was a beautiful thing.

    Another warning!

Don't get caught in the 'thank you' loop. Thanking people for the 'thank you' you received for the 'thank you' you gave them for the 'thank you' you received...

It might be useful to refer to #10 of Paul Myers' blog post:

    Thank you for listening.

Lol Peter, I guess that proves there can be too much of a good thing!

I think there was a Peewee Herman episode that had people sending thank yous for the thank you...
