Who's changed their keywords long after they started their site?

Hey guys,

I have changed keywords for my blog from ones I thought are popular to ones the research told me are popular (talk about being stupid and overestimating). The competition is bigger with new keywords but Google still shows medium only. And with 800k plus searches a month it's much much better possibilities now. I will have to edit some articles and change keywords there too..

So I wonder if anyone has done it? How traffic from your old keywords did? And did it pay off?

Why don't you start from scratch?
I mean, editing old articles may bring your current rank down.

Been working on that site for year and a half. I love it. It's my baby lol! I am thinking of creating myself a second blog too to start from scratch and do only affiliate marketing. Still, love to work on my first blog too.

And as long as it helps me get ahead with new keywords I don't mind temporary drop in ranks.

    Change, no. Add, yes.

An older site of mine suddenly started ranking for a much more popular phrase than I'd intended. Even though it was on the second page, that phrase was bringing in more traffic that the keyword phrase I was originally targeting.

I added a bit of content with the bigger keyword and started building backlinks using that phrase as the anchor. Now I'm #3 for the bigger phrase and still #1 for my original phrase.

That's the best of both worlds, IMO.

Ahh... in my All-in-One SEO plug in I did keep old keywords but put new ones in front of them. I also changed the blog title. This still counts as keeping old and adding new keywords?

Yeah I agreed, just add more kws and start doing Seo for them instead of changing the current keywords. The current ones might look like they suck at the moment, but they are established and you could be getting some traffic for them already.

I agree with the advice above. On my e-commerce store, as I add new product lines I can quickly start adding onsite content, get some backlinks, and start ranking on the new words without compromising the old ones. If there is some relationship between your old keywords and your new ones, you'll see it's quite easy to ramp up on the new keywords

On my last project I made a few corrections in just a few of keywords and also added new keywords to existing one.

But if I thought for a little longer, then you know, I did changed also quite a lot of keywords for some other project, and also did rewrite some content as well and my rankings of that page went up very good! But that was quite a small site, with very little of content and just some 10 pages.

I agree with what the others have posted, you don't want to change keywords.

You want to keep adding new keywords, while still working on the old ones.

It is simply a numbers game, the more keywords you are getting traffic from, the more traffic you'll get overall.

      It all adds up.

Adding keywords is the way to go. That way you won´t need to start from scratch

          There you go Kelly

Just simple, brilliant, logical advice. very helpful to me, and I am sure many others. I am about to update some rubbish sites I have from when I started IM. I knew nothing then and realised that the websites could be money earners for me.

I never thought to do it this way. I was going to scrap and restart.

          Thanks again

Well sometimes happen that we want to get the most visited keywords, but with competitive keywords. What I recommend you is to use a keyword research tool like Keyword Blueprint or Market Samurai because they give you a lot of keywords which has a lot of visits but also that are easy to rank on the first positions.

I have change the keywords from where I begin, but there's no problem because then I rank with the keyword that these 2 software give me and was even better.
